Notes: Summary The arrangement of the photoreceptor cells in the anteromedial (principle) eyes of Agelena gracilens was investigated by means of electron-microscopy. A pronounced dimorphism of the sensory cells of distinct areas of the retina was found. The receptors of the central and dorso-peripheral part show irregular pentagonal cross sections. They carry rhabdomeres on 2, 3 or 4 of the 5 sides of the cells' long axes, with variable alignment of the microvilli. In contrast, the sensory cells from the ventro-peripheral area are more or less quadrangular, and they have developed their rhabdomeres on only one or two sides. In this case, the receptive elements face each other and the directions of their microvilli are almost the same. Moreover, the receptor cells of this site are forming “tangentialrd rows, wherein adjacent rows (and especially their rhabdomeres) are arranged perpendicular to one another. A retina of this particular construction does not provide convincing morphological evidence for a simultaneous analyzer. But, together with two well developed eye muscles, which possibly cause twisting motions of the eye cup, the alignment of rhabdomerec structures in the ventral part of the eye could satisfy the requirements for successive analysis of polarized light. The more general problem of the biological meaning of receptive elements in perpendicular arrangement is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Narrative descriptions of children's behavior within nursery school settings were used to assess overt aggressive and friendly acts of children from two social classes. Comparisons were made at two age levels: approximately three to four years, and approximately four to five years. More differences were found between the social classes in the younger age group than in the older age group. Various social class differences were suggested to account for these findings.
