Notes: SUMMARY.— Sebum production tests were performed in 10 hospitalized male patients with cirrhosis of the liver. Sebum secretion in these patients did not differ significantly from that of normal subjects. No inverse correlation was evident between sebum levels and the presence or severity of oestrogenic physical signs.

Notes: Summary A report on experimental work carried out with a concentrated, EDTA-released rubella virus hemagglutinin (EDTA-HA) containing live virus is presented. The starting substrate was a suspension culture of BHK-21 cells infected with rubella virus. Five batches of lyophilized and 7 batches of non-lyophilized EDTA-HA were prepared. Optimal HA titers were obtained on the 2nd day after infecting the suspended culture with virus, which corresponded to peak cell multiplication. Storage of non-lyophilized EDTA-HA (with the EDTA added at different concentrations) at 4° C for 100 days led to a 2- to 4-fold decrease in the HA capacity. Storage at 37° C for 20 days resulted in a loss of the HA activity. Attempts to elute rubella hemagglutinin from chick erythrocytes were made. If dextrose-gelatin-veronal solution containing 0.01 m EDTA was used as diluent, almost complete elution of hemagglutinin from 1-day chick erythrocytes occurred within 3 hours incubation at 37° C. Intracerebral inoculation of EDTA-HA containing infectious virus into 2-day-old hamsters led to the adaptation of the rubella virus to young hamster brain in further passages. Pathohistological changes in hamster brain were observed. The antibody responses of hamsters given EDTA-HA virus with complete Freund's adjuvant were the most pronounced (HI titers of 1:128–1:2048). However, these titers were not stable and after reaching the peak they dropped gradually. Without adjuvant, the highest HA titers auained were in the range of 1:128–1:256. Studies of the possible teratogenicity of the EDTA-HA virus are being conducted in hamsters. In a preliminary experiment several smaller babies were found.
