Notes: Summary To study the effect of the interaction between macromolecules on surface viscosity, monolayers of poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) with different degrees of polymerization were compared. The dependence of the surface viscosities of monolayers of PBLG on the shear rate was analyzed by the equation given in part I of this series. Results were discussed on the basis of parameters which seem to reflect the size and rigidity of two-dimensional aggregates in monolayers. Analysis of the surface viscosities suggested that polypeptides with high degrees of polymerization form rigid and large rafts (two-dimensional aggregates). Analysis of the dependence on shear rate of the surface viscosities of biological macromolecules, extracted from the cell envelope ofPseudomonas aeruginosa, suggested that these films contained other structures besides raft structures.

Notes: Summary An equation for pseudoplastic surface viscosity was deduced to explain the structures and properties of polypeptide monolayers. In deduction of the equation, it was assumed that the surface viscosity of polymers is related to the energy loss due to the flow of twodimensional aggregates “rafts” and the shear rate dependence of the surface viscosity is attributed to the variation in the size of two-dimensional aggregates in monolayers. The surface viscosityη at a shear rateD is expressed as, $$\eta = \eta _\infty + (\eta _0 - \eta _\infty )/(1 + \beta D^\alpha )$$ where,α is a parameter related to the contributions to surface viscosities of raft-to-raft contact and raft-towater interaction,β is a parameter showing the velocity of rupture of raft structures due to the shearing force andη 0 andη ∞ are the limiting surface viscosities observed at zero and an infinite rates of shear, respectively. It is possible to determine the size and rigidity of the two-dimensional aggregate in monolayers using this equation.
