    Notes: Summary From 1962 to 1969 an investigation on chronic bronchitis was conducted to clarify the chronic influence of air pollution to human health in 9 areas selected from Osaka and Hyogo prefectures showing different degrees of air pollution. Self-administered questionnaire based upon the standard of the British Medical Research Council's Committee was distributed to every residents over 40 years of age in surveyed areas. The questionnaires numbered 36374 with response rate of 85.9%. Cases of chronic bronchitis were diagnosed from the responded following the Fletcher's criteria of chronic bronchitis. Those cases were asked to take further examinations consisting of doctor's direct interview by the standardized questionnaire by the British Medical Research Council's Committee, chest X-ray test, pulmonary function test by McKenson's Vitalor and other optional medical examinations. At the same time, some apparently normal subjects and some other who had less severe symptoms of sputum, cough and/or short breath were likewise medically checked up as the controls. From this investigation, it became clear that the prevalence of chronic bronchitis is influenced by age, smoking and air pollution (sulfur dioxide). The relation among age, smoking and air pollution with the prevalence of chronic bronchitis is mathematically analysed as follows: Y=1.94α+10−4 · 3 · N(x −20)2−3.18 where Y: prevalence of chronic bronchitis, N: smoking quantity per day, α: sulfur dioxide, x: age.

    Notes: Summary Six temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants were isolated from the progeny of wildtype influenza A virus grown in the presence of 5-fluorouracil. All mutants had the efficiency of plating lower than 10−4 at 38° C compared with 31° C. One mutant (ts- 5) failed to produce hemagglutinin at the nonpermissive temperature. Temperature-shift experiments revealed that the temperature-sensitive step ofts-5 resides in the process normally taking place at 4–6 hours post infection. After mixed infection ofts-5 andts-9, different from each other in physiological defect, the occurrence of both complementation and recombination was demonstrated, confirming that they carry genetic defects at different genes.

    Notes: The copolymerization of vinylhydroquinone (VHQ) and vinyl monomers, e.g., methyl methacrylate (MMA), 4-vinyl-pyridine (4VP), acrylamide (AA), and vinyl acetate (VAc), by tri-n-butylborane (TBB) was investigated in cyclohexanone at 30°C under nitrogen. VHQ is assumed to copolymerize with MMA, 4VP, and AA by vinyl polymerization. The following monomer reactivity ratios were obtained (VHQ = M2): for MMA/VHQ/TBB, r1 = 0.62, r2 = 0.17; for 4VP/VHQ/TBB, r1 = 0.57, r2 = 0.05; for AA/VHQ/TBB, r1 = 0.35, r2 = 0.08. The Q and e values of VHQ were estimated on the basis of these reactivity ratios as Q = 1.4 and e = -;1.1, which are similar to those of styrene. This suggests that VHQ behaves like styrene rather than as an inhibitor in the TBB-initiated copolymerization. No homopolymerization was observed either under nitrogen or in the presence of oxygen. The reaction mechanism is discussed.
