Notes: The Fourier coefficients of the line profiles of talc synthesized from sepiolite under hydrothermal conditions (temperatures: 300°C5̃25; pressure 500 atm) were calculated and interpreted using the method of Warren & Averbach [J. Appl. Phys. (1950), 21, 595; (1952), 23, 497, 1095]. The mean thickness normal to the layer plane of talc synthesized from α-sepiolite is larger than that from β-sepiolite, and the mean thickness for each type of synthesis product tends to increase with higher temperatures of synthesis. The mean square displacement, 〈Z21〉, of unit cells in a column of cells perpendicular to the reflection plane generally tends to decrease with higher temperatures of synthesis. The particle-size distribution suggests that particles tend to grow along the c* direction, since the distribution is that of nearly integer multiples of thickness.

Notes: The X-ray diffuse scattering from pentaerythritol is measured at various temperatures. By taking account of five intermolecular force parameters, the dispersion relations are calculated and compared with the observed data. It is found that the interaction between the oxygen atoms connected by the hydrogen bond is stronger and more sensitive to temperature than other interactions.

Notes: [Auszug] Several alternative modes of development for the West Philippine Basin have been suggested during the past few years. The results of Deep Sea Drilling Project leg 31 indicate that none of these speculations is correct and that the basin probably formed by complex pulses of extension during the ...

Notes: Abstract Indirect haemagglutination (IHA), metabolism inhibition (MI) and growth inhibition (GI) techniques were used to test streptococcal, staphylococcal and proteusl-phase variants against antisera prepared in rabbits. All three methods were specific and high titres of antibody were measured by the IHA and MI techniques. In tests on the streptococcal variant, IHA measured antibodies which reacted with both surface and internal components while MI measured antibody directed against surface antigens. Guinea-pig serum did not appreciably enhance the MI titre, its main effect being to depress growth of the organisms. The variants reacted with antisera to the parent bacteria in IHA and MI tests, but the titres were 16-to 32-fold lower than when antisera to the variants were used. The possibility that these methods might help to determine whether chronic bacterial infections are perpetuated by organisms in theirl-phase is discussed.

Notes: Crystallization during melt spinning is studied as an example of the nonisothermal crystallization of polymers. The following equation is derived, taking the temperature distribution within a filament into consideration: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \kappa \nabla ^2 T = {\rm V} \cdot {\rm grad } \ T - \frac{{\Delta H}}{{C_p }}{\rm V} \cdot {\rm grad } \ X $$\end{document} where T = temperature, X = crystallinity, κ = thermal diffusivity, V = velocity, ΔH = heat of crystallization, and Cp = specific heat at constant pressure. The assumptions and the procedure for a numerical calculation of crystallinity and temperature within a running filament are described, and some results of calculation are illustrated. The results are compared with those obtained by a simpler calculation in which the radial temperature distribution is neglected. The simpler method proved useful in connection with x-ray measurements.

Notes: The changes in temperature and crystallinity of polymer during nonisothermal crystallization were theoretically analyzed assuming a cooling condition under which heat transfer occurs at a rate proportional to the difference in temperature between polymer and the environment. When a plateau appears in the temperature change during crystallization, crystallization temperature can be predicted by a simple method. This method gives nearly the same value as that obtained by successive calculations of temperature and crystallinity throughout the whole process. In addition, a graphic method is presented to predict crystallization temperature. By using the plateau temperature observed in melt-spinning experiments, the crystallization rate under molecular orientation is evaluated. Furthermore, a method applicable to estimating the ultimate crystallinity is proposed. A rough estimation of the increase in the rate of crystallization under molecular orientation was carried out for very high-speed spinning of poly(ethylene terephthalate).
