Notes: Summary 1. Histochemical examinations can sensitively demonstrate functional changes in the hair cells. 2. When hair cells are made anoxic, the following three turning points occur in their intracytoplasmic metabolism. a) The first 10 min of anoxia produces a reversible dysfunction of aerobic decarboxylation. b) Anoxia of 30 min duration is critical in the partial recovery of disturbed cellular respiration. c) After 60 min of anoxia, aerobic respiration is irreversibly inhibited and is substituted for by anaerobic glycolysis. d) After 210 min of anoxia, anaerobic glycolysis also disappears. 3. The process of dissociation of cellular respiration and the relationship between aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis correlate well with the changes of the cochlear microphonics in anoxia.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 60 sh-1 Mäusen (120 Cochleae) unterschiedlichen Alters (15 bis 100 Tage) wurde histochemisch die SDH-Aktivität im Corti'schen Organ untersucht.
Notes: Summary The SDH activity of the hair cells of sh-1 mice was topographically examined during several days after birth, using the surface preparation method. The activity of this enzyme in sh-1 mice decreased as the animals got older, the outer hair cells being most affected. The level of enzyme activity was different in the three different turns of Corti's organ, especially for the outer hair cells. There was no difference in the activity among the three rows of the outer hair cells.
