Notes: Abstract The Combined Method is a non-parametric regression technique for long-term prediction of smoothed monthly sunspot numbers. Starting from a solar minimum, a prediction of the succeeding maximum is obtained by using a dynamo-based relation between the geomagnetic aa index and succeeding solar maxima. Then a series of predictions is calculated by computing the weighted average of past cycles of similar level. This technique leads to a good prediction performance, particularly in the ascending phase of the solar cycle where purely statistical methods tend to be inaccurate. For cycle 23 the combined method predicts a maximum of 160 (in terms of smoothed sunspot number) early in the year 2000.

Notes: Abstract Wisconsin cares for its chronic mental patients in county-operated institutions. Two state hospitals provide treatment for acute patients. A demonstration experiment in one of these counties revealed that patients who normally require hospitalization at the state institution could be treated at the county facility. This opening of a county hospital required changes in 3 major areas: (1) changes in public policy regarding the use of the hospital for custodial purposes, (2) changes in the administrative practices of the hospital itself, and (3) the assignment of treatable cases to the institution. It did not require the development of inpatient treatment programs.

Notes: Abstract In a representative survey of the sexualbehavior of the inhabitants of the Czech Republic (862men and 825 women older than 15), questions wereincluded concerning experience with sexually aggressivebehavior: 11.6% of women reported this kind of experience(3.4% of them more than once). The average age at thetime of rape was 21.2 years. Most of these experiencesoccurred within marriage or a stable partnership. In only a tenth of them the perpetrator was astranger. Only 3.4% of the offenses were reported topolice. Of Czech men, 4.8% replied positively to thequestion whether they had ever forced a woman to have sexual contact. The most common form of theseenforced contacts was vaginal coitus.

Notes: Abstract Custodial practices in mental hospitals are usually regarded as antitherapeutic and inimical to treatment objectives. This conclusion arises from the failure to distinguish between custodial organization and custodial goals. It is the existence of the latter that subverts the treatment effort. This paper describes the use of a custodial hospital setting for psychiatric treatment purposes and suggests that elaborate intramural therapy routines may not be necessary to the rehabilitation of patients.
