Notes: The sticking probability of Xe on Pt(111) at a surface temperature of 85 K is found to fall rapidly with increasing kinetic energy over the range 63 to 800 meV. Increasing the incidence angle from 30° to 60° generally raises this probability, in a manner consistent with an approximate scaling with Ei cos1.6θi.

Notes: Since stereotypes about appropriate social behavior appear to influence questionnaires and other self-reported data concerning friendship, an in-depth interview format was used to explore gender and age differences in friendship patterns. Thirty-one subjects were interviewed: five young males, six young females, fivemidlife males, five midlife females, five older males, and five older females. As in our previous questionnaire studies, groups described friendship in superficially similar ways. However, in the taped interviews, large gender differences appeared that followed conceptually along instrumental/expressive dimensions. Women at all ages were more expressive in their friendships, showing higher levels of empathy and altruism than men. Age differences also appeared, with men developing increased concern and thoughtfulness in friendship with greater age, and women showing more tolerance and less confrontation of their friends with greater age.

Notes: We present a microscopic derivation of the Fermi-liquid properties of the Anderson lattice. Our calculations suggest that the low-temperature state of the normal heavy Fermi liquid has a number of universal features, for which there is good experimental evidence. Using the Kondo-boson 1/N expansion, we find the Fermi liquid is characterized by the mean-field "bare'' particles (which are heavy) and their respective interactions. The latter are mediated by fluctuations in the f-level position and valence-conduction electron hybridization. Our calculations lead to the following experimental predictions: (i) the low-temperature specific heat behaves as C=γT∝T/TK with corrections ΔC=(T/TK)3 ln(T/TK), (ii) the zero-temperature spin susceptibility χ∝1/TK, and (iii) the resistivity ρ∝(T/TK)2. These results all contain a unique energy scale TK which is proportional to the inverse effective mass. Experimental support for these predictions is provided by evidence of systematic scaling of χ and ρ with γ throughout the entire class of heavy-fermion compounds. In addition we analyze recent pressure-dependent specific-heat measurements on UPt3 combined with χ and ρ data to confirm the scaling of these quantities with a single strongly pressure-dependent energy scale. This analysis provides evidence against current ferromagnetic spin-fluctuation theories.

Notes: This article describes a novel approach to gas detection. A low-powered diode laser is used to produce a hot spot on the surface of a thin film. When oxygen is present, specific reaction with the film occurs, and a reaction site is formed. The altered optical character of the site is detected and is representative of the oxygen concentration.

Notes: The NOVA laser has completed its first year of operation. During this period, emphasis has been placed on activation of the facility and of the numerous target and beam diagnostics. Two separate target chambers are in use. NOVA operation is separated into two broad functions: laser operations and experiments. The operations group provides the laser system control, operation, and data acquisition and the experiments group provides experiment definition, diagnostic instrumentation, and overall data processing. On the operations side, VAX 11/780 computers are used to set up diagnostic operating parameters and collect data recorded by the CAMAC and CCD modules. These data are delivered in files by electronic link to the Laser Experiments and Analysis Facility (LEAF) VAX 11/785 of the experiments group for processing. Film data are digitized at LEAF and the film data files are also processed on the LEAF VAX. The LEAF provides collection, processing, analysis, and archiving of the experimental data. The many applications software packages written for LEAF provide the experimental physicists and NOVA operations staff with programs and data bases for interpretation of experimental results. This software makes fundamental use of the ORACLE relational data base management system to both access the required data and archive the obtained results. Post-shot data processing produces sets of scalar values, x, y profiles and x, y, z contour data. The scalar data are stored in the ORACLE DB; the more extensive results are stored in binary files on disk. All data forms are accessed by a comprehensive software system, the electronic SHOTBOOK, developed around the ORACLE DBMS. This software also provides the means to archive relevant data about each experimental activity and allows the physicists to annotate displayed experimental results with technical comment.

Notes: A typical laser interaction experiment at the NOVA high-energy laser facility produces in excess of 20 Mbytes of digitized data. Extensive processing and analysis of this raw data from a wide variety of instruments is necessary to produce results that can be readily used to interpret the experiment. Using VAX-based computer hardware, software systems have been set up to convert the digitized instrument output to physics quantities describing the experiment. A relational data-base management system is used to coordinate all levels of processing and analysis. Software development emphasizes structured design, flexibility, automation, and ease of use.

Notes: Pyroelectric detectors are very promising x-ray detectors for intense pulsed x-ray/γ-ray measurements and can be used as x-ray pyrometers. They are fast, passive, and inherently flat in spectral response for low-energy x rays. We report our tests of LiTaO3 detectors at Nova laser with 1-ns low-energy x rays and at Zapp Z-pinch machine with 100-ns x rays. The temporal and spectral responses are discussed.
