Notes: Abstract The atom-atom correlation order is defined and shown to have the special characteristics of the periodic change of its sign along the successive atom pairs and to be useful for the interpretation of some properties of aromatic molecules, that is, stabilities and reactivities. Moreover, the special appearances of the spectra of the alternant and non-alternant hydrocarbon isomers, e. g. naphthalene and azulene, are well understood by using this correlation order.
