    Notes: Abstract Optical pumping on Cs133 atoms was performed by means of a new transmission technique. The cesium vapor was pumped towards equilibrium by an intensive circulary polarizedD 1 orD 2 light beam. A weakD 1 detecting beam was polarized alternately σ+, σ− and allowed one to measure continuously amount and sign of the absorption difference between σ+ and σ− light. The measured signals are proportional to the electron spin polarization. The new technique was used to investigate the influence of Cs buffer gas collisions on the pumping cycle and to measure the influence of radio frequency induced Zeeman transitions on the ground state polarization. In addition the variation of magnetic field and of pumping light intensity and polarization was studied. Some measurements demonstrate the high sensitivity of the applied method. The obtained qualitative results are discussed and further experiments are proposed.

    Notes: Abstract The dependence of ground state spin polarization 〈S z〉 on the degree of collisionally induced excited state mixing has been calculated and discussed using the following mixtures of pumping light:σ + D 1 andσ − D 1 σ + D 2 andσ − D 2 as well asσ + D 2 andσ + D 1. The calculations in this first part have been performed on nuclear spin zero “one-electron” atoms using different mixing modells. Possibilities to determineP 1/2- andP 3/2-excited state mixing cross sections from easily detectable values par example the pass-through-zero of 〈S z〉 and to get informations on the validity of mixing modells are described.     Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es läßt sich somit sagen, daß bei der Untersuchung der Milz die Szintigraphieallein eine ausreichende Methode zur präoperativen Aussage über Form, Größe, Lage und Parenchymdefekten ist. Bei Operationen an der Leber ist neben der Szintigraphie auch die selektive Angiographie eine wertvolle Ergänzung zur Planung des operativ-taktischen Vorgehens. Beide Untersuchungen stellen heute wichtige diagnostische Requisiten in der präoperativen Bauchdiagnostik dar.
    Notes: Summary It may be stated that in the case of clinical studies of the spleen scintigraphyby itself is an adequate method to obtain preoperative information on the shape, size, position, and parenchymal defects. For hepatic operations, apart from scintigraphy, selective angiography is also a valuable supplement for the planning of the surgical procedure. At the present time both techniques represent an important diagnostic prerequisite for preoperative abdominal diagnosis.
