Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary In a culture of Drosophila pseudoobscura, grown in continuous darkness and constant temperature (20° C) a light pulse of 5 min induces a circadian rhythmicity of eclosion. The position of the resulting peaks is compared with the peaks of the following two experimental conditions: a) Culturing of the flies in continuous darkness, followed by a transfer to continuous light (“light on-step”) and b) culturing of flies in continuous light and transfer to continuous darkness (“light off-step”). From the results obtained the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The position of the peaks induced by a single light pulse is not the result of a superposition of the eclosion of two populations, one of which using the “light on-step”, the other one using the “light off-step” of the light pulse for the induction of its eclosion rhythm. 2. The position is the result of an interaction of “light on” and “light off” —signals in the individual Drosophila, since the eclosion peaks occur between the eclosion peaks induced by a “light on-step” and the eclosion peaks induced by a “light off-step”. An interaction of “light on” — and “light off” — effects may also explain results of experiments in which a second light pulse was given at certain intervals after the first one. A third light pulse can be given in such a way that it increases the effect either the first or the second pulse. The interaction of “light on” — and “light off” — signals seems also to be responsible for the position of eclosion peaks in more complicated light programms such as the on used for estimating the phase response curve of Drosophila pseudoobscura (Pittendrigh and Minis, 1964).
