Notes: Abstract The dynamic behavior of the laserfrequencies induced by non-linearities of the active medium is investigated experimentally. Measurements were performed in a laser device of high mechanical stability protected against acoustical noise. Results are discussed in the representative 3-mode-case. Combination tones, as predicted byLamb, were directly observed by a coupled optical amplifier with 5 · 103 cps band width. All observed frequencies are classified in a simple energy level diagram containing only the differences between the original laserfrequencies. Simultaneously performed beat frequency measurements agree with the optically determined spacing between combination tones and original laserfrequencies.

Notes: Abstract The dynamic behaviour of the laser frequencies induced by non-linearities of the active medium is investigated theoretically for the representative case of three simultaneously oscillating modes. Occurance of combination tones is explained byLamb's theory. Experimental values of the spacings between combination tones and laserfrequencies are in agreement with theory. Inserting experimental relaxation times intoLamb's theory the experimental intensities of the combination tones were also found to be in agreement with the theory.

Notes: Abstract The frequency stability of He-Ne-Lasers was investigated by heterodyning two free running laser oscillators. Measurements were performed in a laser device of high mechanical stability protected against acoustical noise. For single mode operation the stability and spectral purity of the laserfrequency was found to be well defined by the constancy and bandwidth of the beat frequencies. In multimode operation beat frequencies were found which were nearly independent from the oscillator cavity length. They were produced by inevitable nonlinearities in the electronic equipment. For pointing out this effect more clearly, an additional nonlinear element was introduced into the electronic circuit. The additional nonlinearity was found to produce the same beatfrequencies as observed before, but with higher amplitudes. Presence of these second order beats may lead to misinterpretation of the frequency stability. From the minimum obtained beat frequency of 200 c/s in single mode operation it was concluded that a minimum laser bandwidth of smaller than 200 c/s was realized.

Description / Table of Contents: The structures of di-(ω,ω′-(N,N′-dimethyl-)ethylenediamino-)o-tolyl-mercury (QN) and di-(ω,ω′-ethylenedioxy-)o-tolyl-mercury (QO) have been determined by three-dimensional FOURIER and least-squares methods. QN crystallizes in colourless needles with the space group P21/a, QO is orthorhombic with the space group Pbn21. The angle of the C—Hg—C bond is 172° in QN and 174° in QO. In both structures the mercury is not coordinated by the heteroatoms.
