Notes: [Auszug] If the mosquitoes were adapted by previous exposure to a very low concentration of some chemical other than carbon dioxide, it is possible that their ability to seek out a host would become impaired. An area treatment with such a chemical may be a useful supplement to the usual protective measures, ...

Notes: [Auszug] A 50 x 18 mm glass specimen tube containing sucrose syrup was exposed in an apiary and a few bees trained to visit it. When sufficient bees were visiting the tube it was replaced by three clean tubes symmetrically arranged on a table that could be revolved. Following Ribbands3, the repellency of a ...

Notes: Summary When honeybees sting an object they release pheromones that direct the attack of other bees towards it. 2-heptanone is the principal aggression-provoking component in the secretion of the mandibular gland. Isoamyl acetate is not the only active component of the aggression-provoking secretion at the base of the sting but no such component occurs in the venom itself.

Notes: Summary A computer programme, written in Elliot Algol has been set up to predict wave frequency and directional spectra over a grid of 100 squares of 200 mile side over the North Atlantic. The frequency spectrum formulae used are those of Darbyshire [1959] and Pierson/Moskowitz [1964]. The energy direction distribution assumed is a normal type one but other kinds like the one obtained by the S.W.O.P. project can also be used. There is also incorporated a feature which allows for the effect of contrary winds on waves. The programme has run successfully with both the Elliot 803 and Atlas computers and predictions were made for the high waves recorded during the last part of December 1959. The results using both frequency spectrum forms agree very well with the observed spectra at weather station J and there is also good agreement between predicted significant heights, periods and directions with observations at other places. The programme can be easily modified to take a finer grid mesh and closer time intervals.
