Notes: Calculations based on n-beam dynamical diffraction theory have shown that the intensities of rings and arcs in diffraction patterns from polycrystalline materials are strongly dependent on the experimental conditions. For arc patterns from BiOCl, calculations confirm a revised formula for the intensities from very thin crystals and indicate dependences on the distributions of orientation, thickness and bending of the crystals which are sufficient to account for the wide deviations of recent experimental results from the predictions of the primary extinction formula, based on the two-beam approximation. Inferences regarding the possible errors in electron diffraction analysis of crystal structures, especially for materials containing heavy atoms, are drawn from calculations relating to the intensities of arc patterns from AgTISe2. It is suggested that n-beam calculations should be made in order to avoid serious error in the refinement stages of a structure analysis.

Notes: The Reciprocity Theorem of scattering theory is shown to hold generally for electrons scattered elastically in an absorbing medium, and also for inelastically scattered electrons, to a certain approximation. Two scattering symmetry conditions are defined by applying the theorem to crystals having mirror symmetry parallel to the crystal surface, and to centrosymmetric crystals. These are general forms of conditions demonstrated by Fukuhara (J. Phys. Soc. Japan (1966), 21, 2645). A number of symmetry effects observable in electron microscope images of crystals result from one or other of these conditions. The variation of intensity of diffracted beams as a function of angular deviation from the Bragg condition is considered in detail. The symmetry of bright-field images of defects lying at equal distances from the crystal surfaces was first explained by Howie & Whelan (Proc. Roy. Soc. (1961), A 263, 217); such symmetry properties can be conveniently classified and explained by the reciprocity theorem. A method of obtaining high-resolution dark-field images, due to Cowley, is based on the use of the reciprocity theorem. Examples of its application for both Bragg and diffusely scattered electrons are given.

Notes: Kinematic X-ray and electron scattering factors, found with the use of relativistic Hartree–Fock atomic fields, are tabulated for 76 atoms and ions. Parametric fits to these are given in the range of sin θ/λ from 0.0 to 2.0 Å−1. A method is developed to obtain the electron structure factor for forward scattering for a crystal containing ionized atoms.

Notes: Abstract Zinc bicrystals containing high-angle tilt boundaries, and others containing twist boundaries were subjected to constant shear stresses parallel to the boundary at temperatures in the range 20 to 300° C. At stresses both above and below that necessary to cause macroscopic slip in the constituent crystals, the grain-boundary sliding rate decreased with time. This “slide-hardening” at the grain-boundary was identified with the formation of asperities in the grain-boundary which were generated first near the intersection of boundary and free surface. Removal of the layer containing these asperities restored the boundary behaviour to that of a virgin bicrystal in certain cases. This leads to the conclusion that when slide-hardening occurs, the rate-limiting process for grain-boundary sliding is that associated with the deformation of the crystal regions which have been introduced into the original boundary plane by grain-boundary migration.

Notes: Summary Results of testing a total of 145 hamsters in 2 separate trials (a total of 90 challenged animals) suggest the potentiality of HIF-coatedHistoplasma yeast cells as a vaccine. Animals challenged with 5×105 Histoplasma yeast cells in saline 3 weeks after initial inoculation with 5 × 104 Histoplasma yest cells in 1) saline or 2) crude HIF in kidney homogenate or 3) the active 280 mµ fraction thereof were protected by the 280 mµ fraction 〉 the crude HIF 〉 saline suspensions ofHistoplasma, based on analysis of tissue sections and cultures. It is suggested that since HIF has also been found in experimental blasomycosis it should be sought in other mycoses, perhaps in all infectious diseases, and its potential use in a vaccine preparation should be more extensively tested.
