Summary The wild diploid progenitors of wheat constitute large gene pools largely unexplored and untapped by plant breeders. Information on the geographic distribution, ecological amplitude, and morphological variability of the three donor species is presented. The mode and place of origin of the hexaploid wheats are discussed and suggestions are made concerning techniques for exploitation of the wild diploid species in wheat breeding programs.
