Notes: Abstract. The unique features (super-low background and large sensitive volume) of the CTF and BOREXINO set ups are used in the CAMEO project for a high sensitivity study of $^{100}$ Mo and $^{116}$ Cd neutrinoless 2 $\beta $ decay. Pilot measurements with $^{116}$ Cd and Monte Carlo simulations show that the sensitivity of the CAMEO experiment (in terms of the half-life limit for $ 0\nu 2\beta $ decay) is $\approx 4\times 10^{24}$ yr with a 1 kg source of $^{100}$ Mo and $\approx 10^{26}$ yr with $\approx $ 100 kg of enriched $ ^{116}$ CdWO $_4$ crystals placed in the liquid scintillator of the CTF. The last value corresponds to a limit on the neutrino mass of $m_\nu \leq 0.06$ eV. Similarly with 1000 kg of $^{116}$ CdWO $_4$ crystals located in the BOREXINO apparatus the neutrino mass limit can be pushed down to $m_\nu \leq 0.02$ eV.

Notes: Summary By using appropriately interchanges between A and B chromosomes in maize it has been possible to reach the following conclusions, chiefly on the basis of genetical experiments: 1. non-disjunction of BA chromosomes in the second microspore mitosis is greatly influenced by environmental conditions; 2. different BA chromosomes undergo different rates of non-disjunction: B10, B4 and B9 chromosomes show, under the same field conditions, decreasing values of such event; 3. following non-disjunction in the above mentioned mitosis, the “directed fertilization”, that is the tendency of the hyperploid sperm to unite with the egg nucleus rather than with the polar nuclei, is greater for B4 and B10, as compared with B9; 4. while non-disjunction in the mentioned mitosis may occur in 70% of the generative nucleus of microspore or more; according to genotype and environmental conditions, as mentioned above, the same phenomenon, although at a very much lower rate, does occur both in endosperm and sporophyte tissues; 5. the presence in the nucleus of B chromatin may not only result in nondisjunction of BA chromosomes, but also may cause non-disjunction of other A chromosomes; 6. kernels differing in BA chromosome endowment may greatly differ in endosperm size, as well as in the size of the plant derived from them; 7. the points (5) and (6) are specifically discussed respectively from the point of view of basic mechanisms of genetic control of nuclear behavior and of application in maize breeding.

Notes: Summary The influence of heterozygous inversions on heterologous chromosome recombination has been studied in maize.Inv 2a causes an increase in crossing-over rate ofYg-Sh region of chromosome9: the reverse is true for the more proximal regionBz-Wx. The coincidence indexes for the traitYg-Sh-Bz is decreased, while the same index is increased for the regionSh-Bz-Wz. Inv 9a is accompanied by an high recombination rate in the distal region of chromsome2 Lg-Gl, while in the regionGl-V the effect is relatively less pronounced. The results seem to exclude mitotic recombination events, but are less suitable for supporting other specific interpretations. However, taking into considerationDrosophila experiments, our data are not conflicting with the physiological hypothesis proposed byRamel, which, at present, appears to explain most of the experimental results, although some difficulty arises in considering the cases of decreased recombination rate. The possibility of modifying, by genetical means, the recombination potential is of significance in some stage of plant breeding, at least in some species.

    Notes: Abstract. The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) has been tested for nucleons (n,p) in ${}^{12}{\rm C}$ and ${}^{16}{\rm O}$ nuclei, using the results of background measurements with the prototype of the Borexino detector, the Counting Test Facility (CTF). The approach consisted of a search for $\gamma$ , n, p and/or $\alpha$ ’s emitted in a non-Paulian transition of 1P- shell nucleons to the filled 1S 1/2 shell in nuclei. Similarly, the Pauli-forbidden $\beta^{\pm}$ decay processes were searched for. Due to the extremely low background and the large mass (4.2 tons) of the CTF detector, the following most stringent up-to-date experimental bounds on PEP violating transitions of nucleons have been established: $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} \rightarrow {}^{12}{\rm\widetilde C} + \gamma) 〉 2.1\cdot10^{27} \mathrm y$ , $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} \rightarrow {}^{11}{\rm\widetilde B} + p) 〉 5.0\cdot10^{26} {\mathrm{y}}$ , $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} ({}^{16}{\rm O}) \rightarrow {}^{11}{\rm\widetilde C} ({}^{15}{\rm\widetilde O} ) + n) 〉 3.7 \cdot 10^{26} {\mathrm{y}}$ , $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} \rightarrow {}^{8}{\rm\widetilde{Be}} + \alpha) 〉 6.1 \cdot 10^{23} \mathrm y$ , $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} \rightarrow {}^{12}{\rm\widetilde N} + e^- + \widetilde{\nu_e}) 〉 7.6 \cdot 10^{27} \mathrm y$ and $\tau({}^{12}{\rm C} \rightarrow {}^{12}{\rm\widetilde B} + e^ + + \nu_e) 〉 7.7 \cdot 10^{27} \mathrm y$ , all at $90 \%$ C.L.
