Notes: [Auszug] In view, however, of the broad substrate specificity of papain2, it would be surprising if papain attack in vivo was restricted to chondromucoprotein. Several glyco-proteins (which contain sialic acid) act as papain substrates, while papain has been found to liberate glyco-proteins from reticulum ...

Notes: [Auszug] Lack and Rogers7 reported the liberation of chondroitin sulphate from cartilage in vitro by the blood protease, plasmin. They suggested that the rapid chondrolysis which occurs in joint infections by streptococci and staphylococci might be due to kinases produced by these organisms activating ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have fractionated rabbit and mouse kidney and liver by a modification of de Duve's method10 and find that activator of plasminogen lies mainly in the heavy granule (lysosomal) fraction (15,000g) (ref. 11) though a little is present in the microsomal fraction (36,000 g). Using human fibrinogen ...

Notes: Summary Ferric tungstate sols were prepared by the dialysis of the reaction products obtained after mixing varying amounts of 0.1 M sodium tungstate and 1.0 M ferric chloride. The sols on further dialysis gave gels. The times of setting of the gels were found to be dependent on the period of dialysis as well as on the ratio Wo4−/Fe+++. The variations in viscosity and conductivity were determined. It was found that the changes in viscosity were more pronounced than the conductance at the sol-gel transformation stage. The plots of the log time of setting against period of dialysis and the plots of log relative variations in viscosity and conductivity gave curves which in the major part were linear pointing towards the thixotropic nature of these gels. The variations in pH under similar condition were found to be small.

Notes: Summary The permeability of electrolytes through inorganic membranes not exhibiting a purely semi-permeable character has been studied. The results on the thorium tungstate membrane show the influence of (i) valency and size of the anion (ii) adsorption on the permeability of different electrolytes. The membrane potential and the permeability of ions is governed by the relationshipY=ax 1/n. This relationship, besides confirming the fact that the higher the membrane potential, the lower is the permeability, further goes to prove that adsorption is directly connected to the membrane potential.
