Abstract:
Summary The author presents the results of his experiences with 40 spinal cord tumours in children. He shows the suddenness, especially in infants, with which the neurological signs develop. He analyses the main neurological symptoms in relation to age, to the statistical distribution of the tumours along the spinal canal, and to the histological classification. Benign and malignant tumours occur with approximately equal frequency; among the malignant tumours sympathoblastoms are particularly common (42%). An analysis of the radiological signs, with and without contrast media, is demonstrated by numerous films from which frequently both the position and the type of tumour is to be inferred. Neither surgery nor radiotherapy offer in children any particular advantage. The prognosis is always poor, especially with the malignant tumours. But this applies also for the benign tumours, among which the post-operative recovery rarely shows the proportion of success that one would expect. The circumstance appears to depend on an especially pronounced delicacy of the nervous tissue of children.
Notes:
