Thiosulphate reacts with all acids in the same way. Besides the decomposition into sulphite and elemental sulphur occurs a pH-dependent formation of polythionic acids. In strong, concentrated acids (HCl, H2SO4), tetra-, penta-, and hexathionic acid are formed, whereas in diluted strong or in weak acids, the composition of tri- and tetrathionate is favoured.

Thiosulfat reagiert mit allen Säuren in gleicher Weise. Neben der Zersetzung in Sulfit und Schwefel tritt eine Polythionsäurebildung ein. Die Art und Menge der gebildeten Polythionate hängt vom pH-Wert der Säure ab. In starken, konzentrierten Säuren, wie konz. HCl und konz. H2SO4, werden Tetra-, Penta- und Hexathionat aufgebaut. In verdünnten starken oder in schwachen Säuren werden die niederen Polythionate wie Tri- und Tetrathionat bevorzugt gebildet. Das Thiosulfat ist in allen Säuren eine gewisse Zeit beständig.
