Summary The maximum oxygen consumption, as measured during strenuous exercise is increased ab. 10% when breathing pure oxygen, of the same order of magnitude as the O2 increase in blood. The better performance in O2 is therefore explained as due to the increased blood O2 available, other factors, such as a higher saturation of Hb or a faster blood circulation, having no appreciable importance.
