The cyclic olefins 4, 5-dihydro-2-methylfuran, indene, 1-methylcylcopentene, and αhyphen;angelica lactone were polymerized using catalyst-cocatalyst complexes of boron triflu-oride with asymmetric Lewis bases. Various conditions of temperature and dielectric constant of the media were employed but in no case was optical activity observed in the polymers produced. The stereochemistry of the addition polymerization of cyclic olefins is discussed and it is proposed that a thermodynamically preferred trans-trans addition may predominate over any asymmetric inductive effect to yield an internally compensated polymer. The anionic polymerization of 1-cyanocyclopentene is also described.
