Summary Combustion at a jet can be employed for the determination of sulfur, halogens, and phosphorus in organic compounds. An auxiliary ignition gas (such as hydrogen) is not necessary. The delivery of the sample must be uniform and adjusted to the feed-in of the oxygen if the greatest possible quantity of the sample is to be put through. Various methods of feeding-in the sample were tested; 150 to 300 mg of sample can be oxidized per minute. The sulfur oxides are absorbed on silver wool at 650° C; the resulting silver sulfate is determined argentometrically. The blank value of the silver wool can be eliminated almost completely by thermal pretreatment at 650° C. The chlorine content is determined argentometrically (with iodine and starch as indicator). Bromine and iodine are titrated iodometrically.
