Summary 1. The yeast isolated byCsillag andBrandstein (4,5) from lungs of infants with interstitial pneumonia in Budapest has been identified by us asHansenula anomala (Hansen) H. &P. Sydow. 2. Our experimental results show thatH. anomala has 1–3 hat-shaped ascospores per ascus. It assimilates potassium nitrate, glucose, galactose, sucrose, and maltose but not lactose. The yeast ferments glucose, galactose, maltose, sucrose, raffinose but not lactose. 3. Interstitial pneumonia cannot be induced experimentally in young and suckling mice withH. anomala.
