    Notes: The collisional behavior of (X)6Li2 molecules in very high rotational levels of v=0 is considered. Highly efficient vibration–rotation transfer is predicted in these "super rotors" particularly when the conditions for quasiresonant transfer are fulfilled. This requires simultaneous near-resonance in energy and in angular momentum. Values of Δj for which quasiresonant vibration–rotation transfer (QRT) occurs become smaller as initial rotor state increases and transfer is likely to become particularly fast for Δj=2, predicted to occur when ji=130. This behavior is contrasted with the inefficiency of pure rotational transfer within the v=0 level for fast-rotating molecules. QRT will take place for quite cold collisions and thus will provide competition for the spinning-up process used to create the super rotors. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Results are presented of a study of the UV photofragmentation patterns of the doubly charged complexes [Cu.(pyridine)n]2+ and [Ag.(pyridine)n]2+ for n=4–7. The two systems behave very differently, with Ag(II) being dominated by the presence of charge transfer products at small values of n. This ease of reduction of Ag(II) can be equated to behavior seen in the condensed phase. At all values of n both types of complex display a remarkable tendency to fragment to the most stable configuration, which can correspond to either a singly or doubly charged ion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Adsorption of water on NaCl(001) is studied at room temperature using recently constructed intermolecular potentials. Coverages of 0.5 and 3.0 water molecules per NaCl were studied in molecular simulations. At low coverage water molecules cluster on the surface to form islands, while at higher coverage a layered structure appears. These results are in agreement with recent Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We explore the application of a simple model of collisional processes, developed initially for inelastic collisions, to the analysis of product rovibrational states in elementary chemical reactions. The model depicts collisional transfer as a process of momentum exchange (predominantly linear-to-angular momentum) and is modified to take account of change in center-of-mass and enthalpy change that accompany reaction. The kinematics of center-of-mass shift derived by Elsum and Gordon [J. Chem. Phys. 76, 3009 (1982)] lead to two limiting cases based on the parameter β. The kinematic extremes alternatively may be specified in terms of the molecular torque arm about which interconversion of linear and angular momentum is effected. This torque arm length approximates to the product bond length when β(similar, equals)0 and the reactant bond length when β(similar, equals)90°. Our approach shares elements in common with the classical kinematic model of Elsum and Gordon but is somewhat simpler and more transparent. The method is shown to give accurate peak values of v, j states of the products of a wide range of elementary reactions for which experimental data is available. Monte Carlo trajectory calculations based on the physical principles described here give excellent fits to experimental v, j distributions in F+I2→IF+I, H+D2→HD+D, and Cl+H2→HCl+H using input data consisting of atomic radii, atomic masses, velocities, and reaction enthalpies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This investigation examines the ability of the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to explain and predict adolescents' verbal (i.e., insulting) and physical (i.e., fighting) aggression, as well as behaviors that encourage aggression such as watching a fight or telling others about a fight that is going to happen. Subjects were 488 seventh-grade boys and girls enrolled in 2 public junior high schools in a large Midwestern U.S. city. Subjects completed a survey assessing components of the TRA as they related to the 4 behaviors under investigation. Consistent with the TRA, analysis revealed that attitudes and subjective norms predicted behavioral intent, and intent predicted behavior, for watching a fight, spreading rumors about a fight, and insulting. For fighting, however, attitudes, but not subjective norms, predicted behavioral intent, and intent predicted behavior. Implications for the TRA as well as for the development of youth violence prevention and intervention programs are discussed.

    Notes: Objective To determine whether the insulin resistance syndrome and altered body composition are features of hypertensive pregnancy.Design Women were recruited in the third trimester of pregnancy from the antenatal clinic, day assessment unit, and maternity ward of St George Hospital, Sydney.Population Women with pre-eclampsia (n=12), gestational hypertension (n=12), essential hypertension in pregnancy (n=11), and normotensive pregnancy (n=10).Methods Energy metabolism was assessed by indirect calorimetry to measure basal metabolic rate and diet-induced thermogenesis. Body composition was measured as lean body mass, total body water and fat mass by bio-electrical impedance. Blood was collected for measurement of glucose, insulin and lipid profiles. Insulin resistance was indirectly assessed by the insulin and glucose concentrations and diet-induced thermogenesis.Results Women with essential hypertension and gestational hypertension were heavier than women with normotensive pregnancies both pre-pregnancy and in the third trimester, whereas women with pre-eclampsia were similar to those with normotensive pregnancy. Women with essential hypertension were otherwise similar to normotensive pregnancy but women with gestational hypertension had a reduced diet-induced thermogenesis and almost double insulin levels. Women with pre-eclampsia had a similar body composition and insulin levels but reduced basal metabolic rate, diet-induced thermogenesis and glucose levels compared with normotensive pregnancy.Conclusions Women who develop gestational hypertension, but not pre-eclampsia, are more likely to be overweight. Women with essential hypertension are similar to women with normotensive pregnancy throughout pregnancy. Both gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia appear to be associated with some degree of insulin resistance, greater than that occurring in normal pregnancy.

    Notes: Real-time monitoring of the dielectric properties of polymer melts and filled polymer melts has been carried out during extrusion. The measurements are obtained using a dielectric cell that is placed directly in line with the extruder machine. The dielectric cell consists of interdigitating electrodes that are deposited on the inside of a ceramic ring that is electrically insulated and temperature controlled to the set point of extrusion. As the processed resin passes through the ring, its permittivity and conductivity are measured. The spatial sensitivity of the cell was determined experimentally and was biased to the resin flowing near the electrodes. Using the spatial sensitivity function, we examined the time profile of the transition from one composition to another during extrusion. We demonstrate the operation of the cell during the processing of polystyrene filled with aluminum oxide and calcium carbonate and of polyethylene-ethyl vinyl acetate copolymer filled with montmorillonite clay. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An optical sensor containing polarizing optical components has been constructed to monitor fluorescence anisotropy during polymer processing and to carry out remote sensing of polymer products doped with fluorescent dyes. The sensor is a compact unit that is used to polarize incident excitation light as well as to analyze the polarization of generated fluorescent light. Optical fibers are used to carry light between the sensor head and the light source and detecting equipment. The anisotropy measurement yields information about the orientation of a fluorescent dye molecule that has been doped into polymer matrix. Fluorescent dyes that have geometrical asymmetry in their molecular structure are used. Experiments are described for which the sensor is positioned in line during extrusion, during specimen extension, and where the sensor is used to carry out area scans of films and sheets. Measurements were made on polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polybutadiene resins that contained a low concentration of fluorescent dye.

    Notes: Hafnium and zirconium silicate (HfSixOy and ZrSixOy, respectively) gate dielectric films with metal contents ranging from ∼3 to 30 at. % Hf, or 2 to 27 at. % Zr (±1 at. % for Hf and Zr, respectively, within a given film), have been investigated, and films with ∼2–8 at. % Hf or Zr exhibit excellent electrical properties and high thermal stability in direct contact with Si. Capacitance–voltage measurements show an equivalent oxide thickness tox of about 18 Å (21 Å) for a 50 Å HfSixOy (50 Å ZrSixOy) film deposited directly on a Si substrate. Current–voltage measurements show for the same films a leakage current of less than 2×10−6 A/cm2 at 1.0 V bias. Hysteresis in these films is measured to be less than 10 mV, the breakdown field is measured to be EBD∼10 MV/cm, and the midgap interface state density is estimated to be Dit∼1–5×1011 cm−2 eV−1. Au electrodes produce excellent electrical properties, while Al electrodes produce very good electrical results, but also react with the silicates, creating a lower ε layer at the metal interface. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that the dielectric films are amorphous silicates, rather than crystalline or phase-separated silicide and oxide structures. TEM shows that these films remain amorphous and stable up to at least 1050 °C in direct contact with Si substrates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
