    Notes: Acoustic transients generated by high-voltage pulses in a transversely excited LiNbO3 Pockels cell are theoretically investigated. The theory treats explicitly the piezoelectric generation and propagation of the acoustic waves, and their interaction with the laser-beam polarization. Expressions for the strain fields and the strain-induced change in index of refraction are derived for short-voltage-pulse excitations. Numerical results are presented for a square- and a Gaussian-pulse excitation. These theoretical predictions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental observations: The waves propagating in the direction perpendicular to the applied electric field have the largest effect on the laser-light polarization. The damping of these acoustic waves is a straightforward application of these results and leads to an increase in the repetition rate of an Nd3+:YLF regenerative amplifier by over an order of magnitude. This work further illustrates the importance of using short-pulse excitations for minimizing the strain-induced birefringence effects for typical laser-beam geometries.

    Notes: During laser welding, the plasma plume affects the amount of energy reaching the weld surface and the composition and properties of the welds. Light emissions during welding were recorded by emission spectroscopy to understand the energy absorption and the nature of the plasma formed during welding of various grades of steels. The flow of gases and the concentrations of the various metal vapors were computed by solving the Navier Stokes equation and the equations of conservation of various species. The variables studied were shielding gas composition and flow rate and the base metal composition. Until now, self-absorption of emissions arising from species present at high concentrations within the plasma has kept researchers limited to either analyzing ideal situations that are unrelated to the welding process or not accounting for the attenuation of the emissions. It is demonstrated that during welding, the peaks in the emission spectra that are affected by the self-absorption process can be eliminated on the basis of the initial and the terminal energy levels for electronic transitions. By selectively eliminating the affected transitions and by using the numerically computed local concentrations of metal vapors, the absorption of the laser beam energy by the plasma can be accurately determined.

    Notes: The orientational decay of chemically and thermally stable high-temperature chromophores doped into thin films made from polyimides and a variety of other polymeric hosts has been investigated. The chromophores are aligned using electric field poling and second-harmonic generation (SHG) is used to probe the decay of the electric field poling induced alignment. The decay rate of the SHG signal from films poled using both a corona discharge and side-by-side in-plane electrodes was measured. When electrodes are chosen so that the effects of charge injection are minimized, little difference has been observed between the orientational decays from films poled using the two methods for either an amorphous preimidized polyimide host or a highly anisotropic film poled during imidization. The films imidized during poling showed significant orientational stability at 250 °C for over 15 h after a fast initial partial decay. In addition, the decay of the SHG signal was measured as a function of temperature below the glass transition in a wide variety of different polymer host systems. The temperature dependence of the decay was found to be non-Arrhenius, but could be strongly correlated with the glass transition temperature of the guest-host system using an empirical relationship similar to the Williams–Landel–Ferry or Vogel–Tamann–Fulcher equation.

    Notes: A recently developed class of digital filters known as morphological pseudoconvolutions is applied to scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. These filters use a nonlinear branch of image processing known as morphology to improve the characteristics of both moving mean and moving median filters. They filter equally in both the x and y directions, so as not to introduce artifacts, and they have an adjustable parameter that allows the user to restore the observed image completely as the parameter tends to infinity. Very few assumptions are made concerning image and noise content; only the shape of typical data is taken into account. These filters are shown to outperform, both visually and in the mean-square-error sense, previously introduced Wiener filtering techniques. The filters are compared on typical STM-type images, using both modeled and actual data. The technique is general, and has been shown to perform very well on all types of STM and atomic force microscopy images.

    Notes: We have demonstrated fundamental and harmonic mixing using a PbInAu/InOxPbOx/Ag superconductor-insulator-normal metal tunnel junction mixer designed to operate over the 450–550 GHz frequency range. Direct mixing experiments at up to 1.8 times the gap frequency of the tunnel junction have shown that the mixer works in both fundamental and second harmonic modes, with the highest conversion from the fundamental mode obtained at bias voltages near the gap voltage and the highest conversion from the harmonic mode obtained at zero bias. The measured mixer conversion curves are consistent with our five-port model simulations based on Tucker's quantum mixer theory [IEEE J. Quantum. Electron. QE-15, 1234 (1979)].

    Notes: Studies of photogeneration of charge in polysilanes resulting from multiple pulse excitation in thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements are reported. The amount of charge that was photogenerated at 80 K and collected during the heating of the sample up to 300 K, ranged from 1×10−9 to 4×10−8 C/cm2 for electric fields of 10–30 V/μm and illumination energy up to 2.5 mJ/cm2 and was found to be dependent both on the electric fields applied during illumination and thermal ramping and on the illumination energy. The results are compared to an idealized model that qualitatively describes for photogeneration of the charge at 80 K and its collection during the TSC measurement. According to this model, multiple pulse excitation at 80 K leads to a buildup of photogenerated charge density in the surface region of the sample and as the temperature is increased, electron-hole recombination occurs, limiting the amount of charge collected by the external circuit.

    Notes: In order to develop nonlinear optical chromophores for frequency doubling applications, it is important to understand the magnitudes of the relevant chromophore properties that will be required. In this paper the use of organic polymers with attached optically nonlinear chromophores to form waveguide second-harmonic-generation devices will be discussed. In particular, the use of such a frequency doubling device in optical storage applications will be considered. To this end limits on the quantity μβ are obtained where μ is the dipole moment and β the hyperpolarizability. Experimental values for electron donor/acceptor-substituted benzenes, stilbenes, and tolanes are compared to these requirements. None of the chromophores treated here have both sufficiently high optical nonlinearity and sufficiently low optical absorption at a doubled optical frequency of 400 nm to be practical in the specific application described.

    Notes: Infrared spectra have been obtained for the liner and T-shaped isomers of CO2–HCN using the optothermal detection method. These spectra correspond to the intramolecular C–H stretching vibration in each isomer. The infrared results are consistent with the structures determined previously from microwave spectroscopy and provide additional data that is helpful in making meaningful comparisons with theory. Ab initio calculations have also been carried out for this system using three different basis sets. The agreement between the experimental and calculated structures is good for all three basis sets, while the vibrational frequency shifts (scaled to the monomer) and the intermolecular stretching force constants are much more basis set dependent. Nevertheless, the overall agreement between experiment and ab initio theory is very good.
