    Notes: Slow dynamics in a fluid are studied in one of the most basic systems possible: polydisperse hard spheres. Monodisperse hard spheres cannot be studied as the slow down in dynamics as the density is increased is preempted by crystallization. As the dynamics slow they become more heterogeneous, the spread in the distances traveled by different particles in the same time increases. However, the dynamics appears to be less heterogeneous than in hard-spherelike colloids at the same volume fraction. The particles which move least far in a characteristic relaxation time and, particularly, the particles which move farthest in the same time are clustered, not randomly distributed throughout the sample. The slow dynamics (but not the statics) show strong finite size effects, suggesting that slow dynamics are correlated over distances of several diameters. We study the dynamics at three different widths of the distribution of diameters of the hard spheres. For each width, the relaxation time is the same function of the compressibility factor, suggesting that this determines the relaxation time for hard spheres. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Influence and persuasion are related, fundamental constructs in interpersonal communication. Both display the relationship qualities of interdependence, bidirectionality, reciprocity, and multiple levels of analysis. Yet, empirical validation of these relationship qualities is lacking, largely due to an absence of appropriate methods and statistical procedures. This article uses the family social relations model (SRM) to test for the personal relationship qualities of influence and persuasion in the family decision-making context of buying a new car. New relationship measures of influence and persuasion were developed because, historically, measures have been at the individual level. The sample size of 110 families proved sufficient for stable parameter estimates. The results uncovered patterns in the relationship qualities of influence and persuasion across 3 decisions families make when buying a new car (i.e., how much to spend, car model choice, final decision). The findings confirm that both influence and persuasion are truly relational. The novel use of the model across decisions allowed the patterns of relationships among family members to be compared, and demonstrated the importance of the relationship qualities of influence and persuasion in decision making. Predictions were examined across decisions as well so as to check the consistency of hypotheses. The results provide further insight into the meaning of influence and persuasion, and of SRM terms.

    Notes: Starting from a protein solution which is metastable with respect to the crystalline phase, the effect of adding semidilute nonadsorbing polymer is considered. It is found to increase the chemical potential of the protein by a few tenths of kT, which may be enough to lower the barrier to nucleation of the crystalline phase by enough to allow crystallization. It is also shown that assuming that the polymer induces a pairwise additive attraction leads to qualitatively incorrect results. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Homogeneous nucleation of a new phase near an Ising-type critical point of another phase transition is studied. A scaling analysis shows that the free energy barrier to nucleation contains a singular term with the same scaling as the order parameter associated with the critical point. The total magnetization of the nucleus scales as the response function and so it diverges. Vapor–liquid critical points are in the Ising universality class and so our results imply that near such a critical point the number of molecules in a nucleus of another phase, such as a crystalline phase, diverges as the isothermal compressibility. The case where symmetry prevents coupling between the nucleus and the order parameter is also considered. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Phase diagrams of some globular proteins have a fluid–fluid transition as well as a fluid–crystal transition. Homogeneous nucleation of the crystal from the fluid phase near the critical point of the fluid–fluid transition is examined. As the fluid–fluid critical point is approached, the number of molecules in the critical nucleus, the nucleus at the top of the free energy barrier to nucleation, is found to diverge as the isothermal compressibility. This divergence is due to a layer of the fluid phase of width equal to the fluid's correlation length which surrounds the core of the nucleus; the number of molecules in a crystalline environment in the nucleus does not diverge. The free energy barrier to nucleation remains finite but its derivative with respect to the chemical potential is equal to minus the number of molecules in the critical nucleus, and so diverges. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Kansas State University cryogenic electron beam ion source supplies low energy ion beams to users of the Department of Energy user facility for highly charged ions. The ions escape the source with an initial energy between 1.6 and 5 kV per charge and are analyzed in a 90° dipole magnet located on the high voltage platform. When leaving the platform the ions can be accelerated by up to 160 kV per charge or can be decelerated to about 20% of their initial energy, covering 2.5 orders of magnitude. We are in the process of adding another order of magnitude to the range of available ion energies as a newly installed lens allows for deceleration down to a very few percent of the initial energy. In addition we present the current microbunching and chopping system which has been substantially improved over the past 2 yr. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
