Notes: [Auszug] THE phenomenon of climacteric rise in respiration of ripening fruits is not fully understood. Blackman and Parija1 explained the rise in respiratory activity in apples on the assumption that in the senescent stage a lowering of “hydrolysis-resistance” occurs leading to a greater ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN Amæba proteus, the cytoplasmic bodies are the nutritive spheres, crystals, neutral red bodies, mitochondria, sudanophil fat and a single contractile vacuole. Fig. 1 illustrates the stratification of the various cytoplasmic components according to their specific gravity after ...

Notes: [Auszug] FOR some time we have been studying the variation of height of the different layers of the ionosphere at different hours of the day and night by the well-known group-retardation method. The technique of Breit and Tuve1, with the later improvements suggested by Appleton and ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE experimental study of an ionized gas in presence of the magnetic field has recently acquired considerable importance in connexion with the ionosphere. Notable investigations have been made by several authors1,2,3,4,5 on the effect of the transverse magnetic field on the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Loss of chlorophyll in senescent leaves is a general phenomenon, and various views have been put forward to explain how chlorophyll disappears as the leaf yellows. The possibilities recognized are: (1) the decomposition of chlorophyll into its basic components and the transference of the latter ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE question how far the development of photo-synthetic activity is concomitant with chlorophyll formation has not been definitely answered; the investigation in higher plants being mainly along two lines: (1) relationship between rates of photosynthesis and chlorophyll formation in leaves in ...

Notes: Summary A new method is developed for the detection of carotenoids in chlorophyll samples. The typical colour curve of chlorophyll in 80 % methyl alcohol exhibits marked absorption in 690μμ to 610μμ and less absorption in 500μμ to 430μμ. The colour curve of chlorophyll contaminated with carotenoids exhibits higher values in the region 530μμ to 430μμ. If carotin is present, the band maximum in the region 530μμ to 430μμ is located at 500μμ, and if xanthophyll is the impurity the band maximum is shifted to 430μμ. On a comparison of the colour curve of the sample to be tested with that of the typical colour curve of chlorophyll the presence of carotenoids at once becomes evident, and carotin and xanthophyll are identified separately by the positions of the band maxima in the region 500μμ to 430μμ. Carotenoids in as low a concentration as 0.05 % are detected by the new method described.
