Notizen: The effects of autoimmune (or idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP) on 51 pregnancies in 29 women is presented. There is no convincing evidence that the clinical course of ATP is influenced by pregnancy. There was no increased incidence of obstetric complications. No problems were encountered following spontaneous vaginal delivery or low forceps delivery. There were no perinatal deaths. Twenty newborn infants were studied in detail and significant thrombocytopenia was present in half of them. The severity of thrombocytopenia in the newborn correlated closely with the severity of maternal disease; those women in clinical remission following splenectomy but with presumed high levels of antiplatelet antibodies were those most likely to be delivered of affected newborn infants. The cord blood platelet count was the most reliable guide to the potential severity of the neonatal thrombocytopenia. Platelet counts were lowest between the second and fourth days of neonatal life. The management of the severely affected infant is discussed.

Notizen: Two modifications have been made to the dry-weight-rank (DWR) method for measuring botanical composition. One previous limitation of the method has been that it gives biased results in pastures where there is a consistent relation between quadrat dry matter yield and the order in which species are ranked for yield. A weighting factor, applied to the DWR multipliers and based on pasture yield in quadrats estimated for dry weight rank, can correct for this bias. In routine pasture sampling quadrat yields are often visually estimated in the same quadrats in which composition is assessed by DWR. These estimated quadrat yields can then be used as weighting factors to improve the accuracy of DWR as well as to estimate pasture yield. Dry weight rank has also been unsuited to pastures which are heavily dominated by one species but this problem can be lessened by assigning more than one rank to the dominant species, a method referred to as ‘cumulative ranking’.Both these modifications were found to give a more accurate estimate of composition using data from a wide range of tropical and temperate pastures. On the other hand, creation of new DWR multipliers for particular cases was inadvisable. All data made available for this study and the original data ('t Mannetje and Haydock, 1963) were used to derive new multipliers: 0·705, 0·238 and 0·057. The overall benefits from using the new multipliers will, however, only be slight.

Notizen: Grass production was measured at 24 sites in the Strathdon area of West Aberdeenshire. The mean total yields of DM from two cuts taken from unfertilized plots in 1967 and from three cuts taken in 1968 were 3014 and 3864 kgJha, respectively. Yields from soils formed on basic parent material were 30–40% more than yields from soils formed on more acidic material; and well-managed swards yielded over 40% more than poorly-managed ones. Aspect did not affect yields significantly, nor did elevation within the range 260–440 m.NItrochalk applied at the rate of 75 kg N/ha in 1968 increased the DM yield by an average of 35% but the efifect of 75 kg P2O5/ha, applied as triple superphosphate, was not significant at the 10% level. The benefits from N declined, wbereas those from P tended to increase, with elevation. There was no significant NP interaction overall, but tbe response from this treatment was better than from N alone on sites with acidic parent material. In 1968, 46% of the total yield was obtained by the end of June and only 10% after the end of August. Whereas yield declined with elevation in May–June, it increased during July–August

Notizen: Relationships between readings of the electronic (capacitance) pasture meter and descriptions of pasture yield were examined over the yearly growth cycle in grazed pastures of Setaria anceps cv. Nandi, with or without Macroptilium atropurpurem cv. Siratro and Desmodium intortum cv. Greenleaf. There was a poor relationship between meter reading and pasture dry matter yield (r =+0.574 pooled over pastures and seasons) but this relationship was improved to r=+0.750 by inclusion of other regressors describing pasture height and proportion of inert material. Meter reading was more closely related to fresh pasture yield (r =+0.830), water yield (r =+0.885) or dried green yield (r =+0.830), although inclusion of a pasture height term still improved the relationship slightly. Suggestions are made about using the meter to estimate dried green yield rather than total dry matter yield, and taking more consideration of the proportion of inert material when relating the meter reading to total dry matter yield.Visual estimation was also compared with actual pasture yield measured by cutting. Even though prior training for yield estimation was inadequate, the relationships between visually estimated and actual yield were as good as those from the pasture meter. It is concluded that the pasture meter will not find a regular use as a sampling tool in most grazed tropical pastures.

Notizen: Oven-drying at 60°, 80° or 105°C was compared with microwave and freeze-drying as a method of preparing samples for the estimation of formononetin, the major oestrogenic factor in red clover. There was no significant difference in the formononetin concentration of clover samples either oven-dried at 60°C or freeze-dried. The formononetin concentration was reduced by drying at higher temperatures and by microwave-drying but was not affected by wilting for up to 8 h after harvesting. The routine determination of formononetin in ten varieties of red clover showed no significant differences between samples cold stored at – 18°C prior to oven-drying at 60°C and samples freeze-dried.

Notizen: When standard skin burns of mice were infected with a virulent strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa there was rapid and extensive penetration of the burn and underlying tissues by the organisms. Under similar experimental conditions an a virulent strain of Ps. aeruginosa remained localized at the surface of the burned skin. In vitro experiments showed that heating did not make the proteins of skin more susceptible to hydrolysis by enzymes, since heated and unheated skin were hydrolysed to approximately the same extent by proteinases from both virulent and avirulent strains of Ps. aeruginosa.
