    Notizen: Abstract The heat capacity of synthetic hydrous cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5O18·nH2O) has been determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) from 295 to 425 K as a function of H2O content. Six samples with H2O contents ranging from 0 to 0.82 per formula unit were examined. The partial molar heat capacity of H2O in cordierite over the measured temperature interval is independent of composition and temperature within experimental uncertainty and is equal to 43.3 ±0.8 J/mol/ K. This value exceeds the molar heat capacity of gaseous H2O by 9.7 J/mol/K, but is significantly smaller than the heat capacity of H2O in several zeolites and liquid H2O. A statistical-mechanical model of the heat capacity of adsorbed gas species (Barrer 1978) is used to extrapolate the heat capacity of hydrous cordierite to temperatures greater than 425 K. In this model, the heat capacity of hydrous cordierite (Crd·nH2O) is represented as follows: Cp(Crd · nH2O) = Cp(Crd)+ n{Cp(H2O, gas)+ R(gas constant)} (1) An examination of calorimetric data for hydrous beryl, analcime, mordenite, and clinoptilolite (Hemingway et al. 1986; Johnson et al. 1982, 1991, 1992) demonstrates the general applicability of the statistical-mechanical model for the extrapolation of heat capacity data of zeolitic minerals. The heat capacity data for cordierite are combined with the data of Carey and Navrotsky (1992) to obtain the molar enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of hydration of hydrous cordierite as a function of temperature.

    Notizen: Summary The cerebral blood flow (CBF) of 25 patients with sickle cell cerebrovascular disease (SCCVD) was examined using a Xenon-CT flow mapping method. Brain CT and MR findings were correlated with those of the Xenon-CT flow studies. CBF defects on Xenon-CT correlated reasonably well with the areas of cortical infarctions on the MR images, but in 27% of the cases, flow defects were slightly larger than the areas of infarctions on the MR images. In deep watershed or basal ganglia infarctions, abnormal CBF was noted about the cerebral cortex near infarctions in 72% of the patients, regardless of infarction sizes on the MR images. However, decreased CBF was recognized in 4 of the 9 children whose MR images were virtually normal. Thus, the extent of flow depletion cannot be predicted accurately by MR imaging alone. Xenon-CT flow mapping proved a safe and reliable procedure for evaluation of the CBF of patients with SCCVD. Although this study is preliminary, it may have a potential in selecting patients for hypertransfusion therapy, as a noninvasive test and for following children with SCCVD during their therapy. Careful correlation of results of CBF with those of MR imaging or of CT is important for objective interpretations of flow mapping images.

    Notizen: Summary Twospotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch are arrhenotokous. As a result of this genetic structure, primary and secondary sex ratios diverge from the 1:1 female:male ratio commonly found in diploid systems. Ratios vary, but 3:1 is the most common. The influence of life history parameters on spider mite sex ratio is unclear, although maternal genetic effects, resource quality and maternal age are known to play a role. An area that has not been studied is the relationship between male reproductive capabilities and spider mite sex ratio. A prior study on male reproduction in spider mites suggests that males have far too high a reproductive capacity to explain sex ratio patterns, but that study was not conducted under realistic mating conditions. Thus, this study was conducted to determine if there is a link between male reproduction and spider mite sex ratio. This was done by exposing males to various exposure regimes of females and recording the number of copulations, inseminations and daughters fathered by each male. Results include the following: i) males are most virile when one day old; ii) virgin males become nearly completely devoid of sperm (or other copulatory products) after about 15 matings and then take about four days to recover; and iii) the optimal number of matings per day (defined as that which produces the greatest number of daughters in the least number of inseminations) is four females per day. The principle conclusion is that although males have a high potential reproductive output, insemination quality is only high for the first four or five matings each day. Therefore, to ensure full inseminations of all daughters by sons, females are constrained to producing primary sex ratios of about 5:1 or less.

    Notizen: Abstract Statistical analyses were used to determine relationships between body size, clutch size and mass, and relative clutch mass and levels of organochlorine pesticides and seven polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in the eggs of adult female common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina serpentina). No significant correlations were found between body size (body mass, carapace length, carapace width, plastron length) and lipid normalized concentrations of p,p′-DDE, mirex, dieldrin, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (IUPAC): #52, #105, #118, #138, #153, #180, #194, and the sum concentration of those congeners. Small sample size and clumping of data around the mode of the body size values prevented inferences of nonlinear relationships. It was concluded that body size and clutch characteristics are not strong or reliable predictors of the level of contaminants in snapping turtle eggs and that adjustment for those parameters would not reduce variation in contaminant levels among clutches. Other variables such as individual food preferences and/or foraging activities are more likely to cause variation in chemical concentrations among clutches of eggs within a population. In order to reduce interclutch variation in contaminant levels to 38.6–55.9% in snapping turtles, sample sizes of at least 15 clutches per site are recommended.

    Notizen: Abstract Individuals of three Anastrepha species: A. obliqua, A. ludens, and A. serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae), were sorted according to pupal weight in cohorts of large and small flies. Demographic parameters and reproductive patterns and heterogeneity were determined for each cohort. Large flies of the three species presented greater expectation of life and gross fecundity rates. A. ludens was the species with the longest life span (expectation of life of large adults was 110 days) and the greatest gross fecundity rates (1597 eggs/female for the large flies). While, A. obliqua had the shortest mean age of reproduction (33 days), and the greatest daily egg production (14 eggs/female/day). Net fecundity was similar in these two. A. serpentina had lower fecundity rates. Reproductive information for each size and each species include: age-by-parity relations, fraction of sexually mature life in which females lay eggs, and frequency distribution of individual egg production. Results demonstrate that even under constant laboratory conditions and using standard artificial hosts, there is a great deal of life history variation among these Anastrepha species and among other tephritid fruit flies.
