Notes: Objective To examine the relation between indices of maternal nutrition during pregnancy, including haemoglobin concentration, skinfold thickness and body weight, and the child's blood pressure at 10 to 12 years of age.Design Follow up study of children whose mothers had haemoglobin estimations, weights and skinfold thicknesses recorded during pregnancy.Setting Kingston, Jamaica.Subjects Seventy-seven children whose mothers took part in a prospective study of nutrition during pregnancy in relation to fetal growth.Main outcome measure Blood pressure at 10 to 12 years of age. Results The child's mean systolic pressure adjusted for current weight rose by 2.6 mmHg (95 % CI 0.5–4.6, P= 0.01) for each 1 g/dl fall in the mother's lowest haemoglobin during pregnancy. Mothers with a lower haemoglobin had thinner skinfold thicknesses, especially over the triceps (P= 0.005). In multiple regression analyses, taking account of the child's sex and current weight, there was a strong association between thin maternal triceps skinfold thickness at 15 weeks of gestation and raised blood pressure in the offspring. Taking account of the mother's triceps skinfold thickness abolished the relation between lower haemoglobin and raised blood pressure in the child. Lower weight gain between 15 and 35 weeks of gestation was independently associated with raised children's blood pressure. Systolic pressure rose by 10.7 mmHg (95 % CI 5.7 to 15.6, P= 0.0001) for each log mm decrease in the mother's triceps skinfold thickness, and by 0.6 mmHg (95% CI 0.1 to 1.0, P= 0.02) for each 1 kg decrease in the mother's weight gain during pregnancy. Conclusions These results parallel animal experiments suggesting that impaired maternal nutrition may underlie the programming of adult hypertension during fetal life.

Notes: We describe a new diode laser current controller which features low current noise, excellent dc stability, and the capacity for high-speed modulation. While it is simple and inexpensive to construct, the controller compares favorably with the best presently available commercial diode laser current controllers.

Notes: The linear-chain approximation is used to calculate the spectrum of confined longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon frequencies in short-period strained-layer superlattices. The frequencies for confined LO-phonon modes are reported explicitly for the case of GaAs/GaP short-period strained-layer superlattices grown in the 〈001〉 direction. These results are compared with the few existing experimental measurements for such superlattices.

Notes: Measurements have been carried out of the position-dependent detection efficiencies of two quadrupole-type commercial mass spectrometers with electron-impact ion sources. Contours of constant detection efficiencies for different ion source parameters were determined by scanning a collimated argon beam of 1-mm diameter across the ion source. The measured results show clearly how different ion source settings influence the detection efficiency and the size of the active volume within the ion source. Furthermore it is found that the optimal performance of the instrument in the molecular-beam mode as well as in the residual gas mode occurs at the same ion source settings. The absolute value of the detection efficiency, for this particular ion source setting, is Dmax = 0.88 × 10−5. A simple model is developed connecting the conventional sensitivity factor with the measured position-dependent detection efficiency contour plots. The agreement between the measured and calculated sensitivity factors is good.

Notes: Abstract. A 2-year field experiment assessed the effectiveness of fertilizer, surface applied and injected liquid digested sewage sludge in increasing yields from reclaimed but regressing pasture on colliery spoil. At the first harvest, surface applications of sewage sludge gave the largest yields, although only a third of total fertilizer nitrogen (N) had been applied at this stage of the experiment. The greatest yields in the first year were given by fertilizer treatments which included the highest level of applied N, and large surface applications of sludge.Surface applications of sludge on plots that were ripped gave the largest residual yields in the second year of the experiment. The percentage cover of clover was inversely related to the amount of nitrogen applied. A study of plant roots indicated that soil injection supplies sludge at too great a depth to benefit grass.Taken overall the results confirm that the regression of pastures established on reclaimed colliery spoil is primarily caused by lack of nitrogen and phosphorus. But the effect of compaction in decreasing root growth, and therefore the ability of the grass to take up nutrients, is also apparent.

Notes: As part of a randomized controlled trial of a new district co-ordinating service for the care of terminally ill cancer patients, the activities of the nurse co-ordinators and the acceptability and perceived effectiveness of the service were assessed Co-ordinators' activities were self-recorded, professional caregivers completed a postal questionnaire, and family carers were interviewed at home Thirty-eight per cent of patients allocated to the co-ordmators were not visited at home Overall, 41% of professionals had heard of the co-ordinating service and 20% had been contacted A third of relatives, whether allocated or not to the co-ordinating service, felt that terminal care of their patient was not well co-ordinated and that they did not know how to get the help they needed for their dying relative It may be that the nurse co-ordinators were unwilling or unable to relinquish their skills in order to provide a‘broker’style of co-ordination Perhaps less skilled co-ordinators would have been more successful Moreover, the co-ordinating service had no budgetary responsibility Those concerned with quality assurance in co-ordination of terminal care might consider the skill mix and professional training of the co-ordinators as well as their budgetary responsibilities and authority

Notes: Traditionally, sewage-works design in Hungary has been based on rigid national standards with little consideration being given to the requirements of individual situations. This has resulted in plants that performed poorly and were expensive to construct and operate. The paper describes measures to improve the environment by upgrading Miskolc sewage-treatment works, and the conflict between the cost of those facilities, and the ability to pay against a background of changing economic conditions.

Notes: A recently introduced EC Directive requires that soils receiving sewage sludge should be sampled to a greater depth (250 mm) than previously. The Water Research Centre foresaw the difficulties that could arise for responsible Authorities if they were to cope with the extra workload and maintain the quality of sampling, and therefore it funded the development of an automatic sampler. This report traces the development of the sampler which was mounted on an all-terrain vehicle, and illustrates its suitability for the task by reporting one year's operating experiences. Work rates have been up to eight times those with hand sampling.A production machine from the first batch is also described.
