Notizen: The resurgence of personality tests in selection has sparked interest in factors that may increase the utility and acceptability of these tests. Following a justice framework, the present study explores two possible methods for improving the psychometric properties and test-taker perceptions of a widely used measure of personality, the NEO-Five Factor Inventory. The first manipulation altered respondents' frame-of-reference (FOR) by adding “at-work” tags to the personality test. The second provided information about the validity and appropriateness of the personality test for selection. Under the controlled setting of a laboratory experiment, participants (n=345) were randomly assigned to one of the conditions in the following between-subjects design: 2 (FOR: work specific vs. generic) × 2 (information: validity vs. control). The FOR manipulation produced consistent effects on the personality test responses, but in contrast to recent claims, produced no effect on test perceptions. Alternatively, the information manipulation primarily influenced job-relatedness perceptions, but had a modest negative effect on the psychometric properties of the personality test. These results show some possibilities, and difficulties, for enhancing perceptions of personality tests. They also have important implications for justice theory because they suggest that interactions among the procedural justice rules may yield unexpected and contradictory effects.

Notizen: There is increasing evidence that neuron death in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, is due to the activation of programmed cell death. However, the upstream mediators of cell death remain largely unknown. One approach to the identification of upstream mediators is to perform gene expression analysis in disease models. Such analyses, performed in tissue culture models induced by neurotoxins, have identified up-regulation of CHOP/GADD153, a transcription factor implicated in apoptosis due to endoplasmic reticulum stress or oxidative injury. To evaluate the disease-related significance of these findings, we have examined the expression of CHOP/GADD153 in neurotoxin models of parkinsonism in living animals. Nuclear expression of CHOP protein is observed in developmental and adult models of dopamine neuron death induced by intrastriatal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6OHDA) and in models induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). CHOP is a mediator of neuron death in the adult 60HDA model because a null mutation results in a reduction in apoptosis. In the chronic MPTP model, however, while CHOP is robustly expressed, the null mutation does not protect from the loss of neurons. We conclude that the role of CHOP depends on the nature of the toxic stimulus. For 6OHDA, an oxidative metabolite of dopamine, it is a mediator of apoptotic death.

Notizen: Objectives  Review the uterine electromyography (EMG) and cervical light-induced fluorescence (LIF) devices and their role in the evaluation of uterine and cervical function in comparison with present methods.Design  Review of recent studies.Setting  University of Texas Medical Branch Labour and Delivery Clinics.Population  Various groups of pregnant women. Methods  We have developed and recently improved non-invasive methods to evaluate quantitatively uterine electrical signals from the abdominal surface and cervical collagen.Main outcome measures  Uterine EMG utilised power density spectrum (PDS) peak frequency and total power (P0) and cervical LIF utilising LIF ratio. Results  Human studies indicate that uterine and cervical performance can be successfully monitored during pregnancy using EMG and LIF, respectively, and the assessment of uterine and cervical function can both be used to influence patient management in a variety of conditions associated with labour, more than can currently available methods. Conclusions  The potential benefits of the proposed instrumentation include the following: a reduction in the rate of preterm birth, improved maternal and perinatal outcome, better monitoring of treatment, decreased caesarean section rate and better research methods for understanding uterine and cervical function.

Notizen: We present the interesting case of a young man with borderline wide QRS complexes noted on electrocardiogram (ECG). The diagnosis of an unusual form of preexcitation was reached using observations from intracardiac tracings at electrophysiology study. Atrial pacing consistently resulted in further widening of the first conducted QRS complex, and the physiology underlying this unusual finding is explored.

Notizen: With genome sequencing nearing completion for the model organisms used in biomedical research, there is a rapidly growing appreciation that proteomics, the study of covalent modification to proteins, and transcriptional regulation will likely dominate the research headlines in the next decade. Protein methylation plays a central role in both of these fields, as several different residues (Arg, Lys, Gln) are methylated in cells and methylation plays a central role in the "histone code" that regulates chromatin structure and impacts transcription. In some cases, a single lysine can be mono-, di-, or trimethylated, with different functional consequences for each of the three forms. This review describes structural aspects of methylation of histone lysine residues by two enzyme families with entirely different structural scaffolding (the SET proteins and Dot1p) and methylation of protein arginine residues by PRMTs.

Notizen: The conventional wisdom is that the surge in productivity growth which has surged in the United States over the past 15 years has been attributed almost wholly to advances in the production and use of information technology. While this is certainly evident from the statistics, a driving force behind the IT revolution has been the development and growth of new firms. Indeed, the U.S. economy has achieved a remarkable transformation over the last several decades from an economy characterized by large, bureaucratic firms into one increasingly powered by entrepreneurial innovation. The challenge ahead therefore is to cement and strengthen the entrepreneurial form of capitalism. In this paper, we provide a framework for policymaking to achieve this objective.
