    Notizen: Abstract The effects of small sample sizes on the statistical analysis of eigenvalue distributions were analyzed numerically. The behavior of the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution, the Δ3 statistic, and the linear correlation coefficient between adjacent spacings was studied, and the effects of missing or spurious levels and of unfolding an energy-dependent level density were explored. For small sample sizes the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution appears to be the most reliable of these three statistics.

    Notizen: Abstract The fluctuation properties of the energy levels of26Al from the ground state to excitation energies of about 8 MeV have been examined. Several statistics have been employed, and particular attention has been given to the suitability of these statistics for small sample sizes. The results show, for a variety of states, behavior intermediate between GOE and Poisson but apparently favoring GOE. The results are consistent with the fluctuations' being independent of isospin.

The levels are combined in several ways to search for effects due to mass, spin, and shape. A strong mass dependence appears to be present, and there are suggestions of effects due to spin and deformation.
