Notes: Abstract The recruitment of monocytes into the scrapie-affected brain was investigated in female mice reconstituted with male bone marrow, using a Y-chromosome-specific probe and F4/80 immunocytochemistry. Recruitment of monocytes could be demonstrated in six out of eight animals and the number of recruited cells correlated with the severity of vacuolation in most, but not all, animals. The proportion of microglia derived from recruited monocytes varied between individual animals, did not correlate with the increase in cellularity (glia) in affected areas of brain and did not affect the length of incubation period. Thus, it is unlikely that the recruitment of monocytes is a pivotal event in the development of early pathological changes in scrapie. The morphology of recruited cells in scrapie lesions, as revealed by F4/80 immunoreactivity, was indistinguishable from that of activated resident microglia.

Notes: Abstract The possibility that cerebral tumours may be graded by measuring T1 or T2 with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was studied. A consecutive series of patients with subsequently verified gliomas was enrolled, and studied with MR. Patients who had prior surgical, chemotherapeutic or steroid treatment were excluded. Single slice multiple saturation recovery and multiple spin echo techniques were used to measure T1, T2 and proton density in the tumour. In 33 patients with cerebral gliomas there were 5 grade I, 12 grade II, 7 grade III and 9 grade IV. T1 and T2 values tended to be smaller in grade I gliomas than in grades II, III and IV gliomas. Relaxation parameters overlapped considerably in tumours with different grades. Proton density values did not show much change between different grades of gliomas. Relaxation parameters cannot be used to determine tumour grade reliably.

Notes: Summary With T1-weighted gradient recalled echo (GRE) MR images and flow compensation, we studied the superior sagittal sinus in 3 normal volunteers and 3 patients with sinus occlusion. In these images, sites of patency of the superior sagittal sinus were identified due to the high signal intensity of the normal sinus. Tumor invading the sinus was nearly isointense with cerebral gray matter. T1-weighted GRE imaging proves to be an effective technique to evaluate sinus blood flow.

Notes: Summary We studied the subjective rating of MR image quality as field strength, slice thickness, number of acquisitions and matrix size were varied. Matrix and number of acquisitions had the most significant effect on image quality. Therefore, in comparisons of image quality, technique must not be disregarded.

Notes: Abstract Theγ-radiation emitted after thermal neutron capture in isotopically enriched58Ni and60Ni was measured at the ILL high flux reactor by means of Ge/NaI detectors operated in Compton suppression and pair spectrometer mode. The neutron binding energies were determined asB n (59Ni)=8999.15(23) keV and Bn(61Ni)=7820.07(20) keV; some 95% of the totalγ-ray fluxes through59,61Ni were assigned. Theγ-ray strength functions of the primary transitions and the level densities are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The γ-radiation following single and double neutron capture in isotopically enriched62Ni was studied at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, using a pair and Compton suppressed germanium detector. Measurements before and after 170 d of breeding were performed. The γ-ray fluxes through63Ni and64Ni are discussed; several new levels and spin-parity assignments were found. On the basis of the known discrete levels and the low-energy neutron resonances, level density parameters were determined within the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas model. The neutron binding energies were measured asB n (63Ni)=6837.92(18) keV andB n (64Ni)=9657.64(24) keV. The63Ni (n, γ) cross section for reactor neutrons was measured to be σ=20 −2 +5 b.
