    Notizen: Abstract The analysis of experiments on parity mixing in compound nuclear resonances is described, with the nuclear spectroscopic aspects of the parity violation experiments emphasized. Expressions are derived for polarized neutron scattering and polarized neutron capture on unpolarized targets, and the resonance interference is treated explicitly. Examples are presented to illustrate the effects of entrance channel mixing for the case of target spin 1/2 and resonance spin 1. Results are also presented for targets with spins 0 and 3/2.

    Notizen: Abstract The assumption that the distribution of reduced partial-width amplitudes is multivariate Gaussian is tested by separate measurement of width and amplitude correlations. Two approaches to the analysis are employed:1) analyzing the data sets separately and then averaging the results;2) combining the data sets and then performing the analysis. Although the latter procedure provides a nuclear width ensemble (1117 widths), several tests suggest that it is preferable to analyze the individual data sets and then average the results. When the data are transformed to a representation in which the amplitude correlation is zero, the average width correlation for 21 data sets is ¯r w =−0.01+0.03, consistent with the Gaussian assumption.

    Notizen: Abstract Parity non-conserving neutron transmission asymmetries have been calculated for unpolarized beams on polarized targets. As the neutron beam propagates through a polarized target, some components are preferentially absorbed. This acquired polarization complicates the interpretation of transmission measurements. We extend the analysis of Postma et al. to include parity mixing in the neutron resonances and emphasize the importance of the nuclear resonance spectroscopy. The relative importance of the acquired polarization contribution is determined by the spectroscopic parameters.

    Notizen: Abstract The fluctuation properties of the energy levels of26Al from the ground state to excitation energies of about 8 MeV have been examined. Several statistics have been employed, and particular attention has been given to the suitability of these statistics for small sample sizes. The results show, for a variety of states, behavior intermediate between GOE and Poisson but apparently favoring GOE. The results are consistent with the fluctuations' being independent of isospin.

    Notizen: Abstract Angular distributions and excitation functions were measured for 30 2+ resonances in the39K(p,p0) and39K(p, α0) reactions. Partial reduced widths have been extracted for three proton channels; the relative signs of the reduced width amplitudes for two of these channels were also determined. Reduced widths are generally consistent with a Gaussian distribution for the reduced width amplitudes, but the amplitudes themselves are not. These data represent the first measurement of correlation coefficients in an entrance channel and suggest that the large correlations previously observed in exit channels are generic features of this mass region.

    Notizen: Abstract Magnitudes and relative signs of amplitudes for three inelastic proton channels have been determined for 42 3/2+ resonances in57Co in the rangeE p =3.1–4.0 MeV. Amplitude and width channel correlations have been obtained for each pair of channels. One of the amplitude correlations is large and highly significant. Comparisons between these data and statistical theories of nuclear levels are presented for both widths and products of amplitudes; in general, agreement is good. The widths for one channel and amplitude products for one pair of channels appear energy-dependent, with most of the strength concentrated in the lowest 200 keV.
