Notes: Abstract Grasshoppers, Schistocerca americana, reared from hatching on artificial diet had fewer sensilla on the antennae in the final larval stage than insects reared on lettuce. This was true of basiconic and coeloconic sensilla (presumed olfactory) and trichoid sensilla (presumed gustatory). The degree of difference varied along the antenna and with sensillum type. Adding salicin to the diet restored the numbers of all types of sensillum to levels equal to, or approaching, those in lettuce-fed insects. The addition of some volatile compounds – carvone (monoterpene), chalcone (flavonoid), citral (monoterpene) and guaiacol (phenolic) – resulted in slight increases in number, but coumarin (phenylpropanoid) had no effect. None of the compounds, either singly or in combination, produced more sensilla than were present in plant-fed insects.

Notes: Abstract The influences of esfenvalerate on mite behaviour were investigated by image analysis. Video recordings of the locomotory behaviour of two mite species were converted into a series of x,y coordinates that, when joined, closely resembled their paths. These coordinates were used to calculate walking speed, direction of travel, turning frequency, turn bias and tortuosity. Two experimental arenas were used: (1) a leaf disc arena for the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi and (2) a glass coverslip arena for Typhlodromus pyri. The behavioural responses of P. ulmi and T. pyri to esfenvalerate (field rate) indicated that these mites did not show a preference for the unsprayed halves of the arenas during the first 48 min. However, significant differences between most of the behavioural parameters to esfenvalerate residues were found with P. ulmi when whole arenas were compared. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998

Notes: Abstract The58Ni(30Si,αpn)82Y reaction at a beam energy of 134 MeV was used to populate the odd-odd nucleus82Y and coincidentγ rays depopulating high spin states in the evaporation residues were detected with the EUROGAM Phase 2 array. A superdeformed structure has been observed with an intensity of 1.5±0.5%. The cascade of 9 coincidentγ rays has consecutive energy spacing of ∼160 keV. This corresponds to a dynamic moment of inertia which is almost constant at approx mately 25h 2 MeV−1. The band is interpreted as a signature=0, negative parity SD band with aπ51 V52 intrinsic intruder configuration.
