Abstract Fully quantum mechanical calculations are carried out for both doubly even and doubly odd nuclei in the rare-earth region using the angular momentum projection method. We investigate the mechanisms of backbending in doubly even nuclei and signature inversion in doubly odd nuclei using a common hamiltonian for both types of nuclei and show that these two seemingly different phenomena are due to the crossing of decoupled bands. Agreement between theory and experiment is quite satisfactory.
