Notizen: Abstract  The δ13C-values of organic acids and their correlations to those of the sugar and ethanol, respectively, from 57 EU data bank wines of the Rheinpfalz area (years 1991 – 1993) and from some of their corresponding musts have been determined. In addition to the well established difference between fermented sugar and ethanol (Δδ13C = –1.7±0.2‰), a new constant correlation was found in wine for ethanol and citric acid (Δδ13C = +2.4±0.4‰). From this result a fixed δ-value difference for citric acid in wine to the fermented sugar of +0.7±0.6‰ can be deduced. The δ13C-values of L-malic acid and L-tartaric acid in must were not altered by the alcoholic fermentation; they should therefore directly provide access to the δ13C-value of the natural sugar in must. However, in non-adulterated wines the expected δ13C-value differences between these acids and ethanol showed unsatisfactory correlation coefficients. For L-malate this is attributed to the secondary (partial) degradation of this acid by the malolactic fermentation; a corresponding correction is envisaged in order to make L-malate available as an internal standard. As a reason for the unsatisfactory correlation between L-tartaric acid and ethanol, it is supposed that the time of its maximum biosynthesis period does not coincide with that of glucose in the grape ripening period.

Notizen: Summary The effects of temperature on growth in broth and soil and on competition for nodule formation betweenRhizobium japonicum serotypes USDA 76 and 94 compared to 6 and 110 were studied. Increasing root temperatures of Lee soybean from 20 to 35°C increased the competitiveness of 76 and 94 relative to 6 and 110 for all inoculum ratios such that at 30 and 35°C symptoms ofRhizobium-induced chlorosis appeared. Tolerance to elevated temperatures was exhibited by 76 and 110, but not 94 and 6 in broth and soil which suggested that increased competitiveness of 76 and 94 at high soil temperatures was not dependent upon growth at elevated temperatures. Nodulation and vegetative growth of Lee soybeans were at a minimum at 20°C and optimum at 30°C. Differences in competitiveness of 6 to previous studies indicated the need to standardize temperatures of assays. Differences in growth responses of 76 and 94 to temperature from a previous study suggested a confounding effect on different carbon sources in growth media.

Notizen: Abstract With doppler-reducedintermodulatedoptogalvanicsaturation laserspectroscopy (IMOGS) in Eu I the isotope shift (IS) and hyperfine structure (hfs) of the remainingb 8 D term of the configuration 4f 7 5d 6s was investigated. With the help of former measurements in our group (a 6,10 D) and by other authors (a 8,10 D) the IS of the now complete configuration (20 levels) was analysed with wavefunctions by J.-F. Wyart. From the parametric description of the IS resulted the necessity also to include the often neglected small parameterg 1(g 1(4f, 5d)=9.3(3) MHz), which is mainly due to the specific mass shift. The IS of all 20 levels can be well described by further crossed-second-order parametersg 2(5d, 6s)=−401(5) MHz andg 3(4f, 6s)=−27(1) MHz and one commonJ-dependent parameterz 5d =40.4(4.1) MHz. — With effective one-electron parametersa kl ,b kl an interpretation of the magnetic and electric hfs (except for a few disturbed levels) could also be carried out.
