Notes: Summary We introduce a new Skorohod topology for functions of several variables. Since ann-variable function may be viewed as a one-variable function with values in the set of (n−1)-variable functions, this topology is defined by induction from the classical Skorohod topology for one-variable functions. This allows us to define the notion of completen-parameter symmetric Markov processes: Such processes are, for any 1≤p≤n, rawp-parameter Markov processes (in the sense of our previous paper [17]) with values in the space of (n−p)-variable functions. We prove, for these processes and their Bochner subordinates, a maximal inequality which implies the continuity of additive functionals associated with finite energy measures. We finally present several important examples.

Notes: Summary We study a class of multiparameter symmetric Markov processes. We prove that this class is stable by subordination in Bochner's sense. We show then that for these processes, a probabilistic and an analytic potential theory correspond to each other. In particular, additive functionals are associated with finite energy measures, hitting probabilities are estimated by capacities, quasicontinuity corresponds to path-continuity. In the last section, examples show that many earlier results, as well as new ones, in this domain can be obtained by our method.

Notes: Summary Twenty-eight mature cats were exposed to 0.3% carbon monoxide (CO) gas for 90–193 min using artificial ventilation. The systemic blood pressure (BP), venous pressure (VP), blood flow of the left common carotid artery (CF), and blood gas were monitored. The local blood flow (LBF) of the globus pallidus, putamen, or claustrum was measured by the hydrogen clearance method. Pallidal lesions were found histologically in 14 cats. The period of CO inhalation and the time thereafter were divided into the following four stages in the animals with pallidal lesions. Stage 1: Initial phase with rapid increase in the CF and LBF, and rapid decrease in the BP. Stage 2: Middle phase with slow decrease in the BP, CF, and LBF. Stage 3: Terminal phase with rapid decrease in the BP, CF, and LBF. Stage 4: Recovery phase. The changes in stage 3 were not so prominent in the animals without pallidal lesions. The LBF of the globus pallidus of the animals with lesions decreased to 67.3±20.7% of the initial value at the terminal stage of CO inhalation, while it was 188±46.7% in those without lesions. The difference was statistically significant (P〈0.01). The LBF of the putamen or claustrum in the animals with lesions in the globus pallidus was 140±24.6% at this stage, and it was significantly higher than that of the globus pallidus (P〈0.01). Other factors, such as CO inhalation time, degree of acidosis, and terminal CO-Hb concentration, did not correlate with the occurrence of the pallidal lesion.

Notes: The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of solutions of 2-chloro-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxarsolane (1) and 2-chloro-1,3,2-dioxarsolane (2) are reported as a function of temperature, concentration and solvent. These data indicate rapid intramolecular conformational averaging for (1) and (2) under all the conditions investigated. Additionally, intermolecular conformational averaging processes are shown to be present. The kinetic parameters for intermolecular exchange were obtained from line shape analysis of the 1H NMR data. These results indicate the intermolecular exchange to be bimolecular in nature, involving a four-centered transition state. The O—CH2—CH2-O torsional angle of (2) has been calculated from the analysis of its AA′BB′ 1H NMR spectral patterns, obtained at low concentrations in the absence of intermolecular exchange.
