Abstract Using an elastic vibration model for phonons of an oxidized small metallic particle, size dependence of the superconducting transition temperature TC is derived. It is shown that the oxidization results in the reduction of TC with decrease in particle size. The main cause is that the surface oxide enhances the phonon frequencies as the particle size decreases. Superconducting character of amorphous thin films and its relation to an oxidized small particle is also discussed.
