Notizen: Summary Adult rats were injected intraventricularly with 6-OHDA and allowed to recover for varying time periods in either an enriched colony environment or in isolation cages. When tested behaviorally in a novel environment, isolated animals showed a cyclical recovery pattern, with behavioral changes at 14 days after lesioning which were different from those seen at 2 and 45 days after lesioning. In contrast, animals housed in a colony environment showed progressive improvement and better recovery than isolates. Biochemical studies of uptake of H3NE and histofluorescence indicated that colony housed animals had enrichment effects (higher cortical NE uptake), but they were also more susceptible to 6-OHDA and did not recover well from the lesions. Isolated animals showed somewhat better recovery of NE uptake following 6-OHDA injections, especially in cortex. Because behavioral recovery from 6-OHDA was dissociated from biochemical indicators of recovery in NE circuitry, these results imply that brain systems other than NE were primarily responsible for the enhanced behavioral recovery which occurs in enriched environments.

Notizen: Abstract Amorphous carbon (a-C) films obtained by pulsed-laser ablation of graphite have been investigated by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). The onset of 1s →σ * transitions in the films lies in the gap between theπ * andσ * bands in graphite and very close to the absorption edge of diamond, indicating a high content ofsp 3 hybridization. A sharp feature at this onset is observed and assigned to a core exciton insp 3-hybridized disordered C atoms. Its shift of 0.5 eV with respect to the core exciton in diamond is probably due to a higher localization of the excited electron induced by disorder. A small peak coming from C−H bonds at the surface is observed and its intensity inereases with the amount ofsp 3-hybridized atoms in the sample. This can be easily explained by associating a higher amount of dangling bonds at the surface to a highersp 3 content. Polarization-dependent XAS measurements show that the angular distribution of these C−H bonds has a mean value close to the normal to the surface.

Notizen: Summary The consumption of antidiabetic drugs in a Spanish region (Extremadura) in the period 1986–1987 has been investigated by the “defined daily dose” (DDD) method. The study was done in three health care systems in the region: civil servants (“Mutualidad de Funcionarios Civiles del Estado: MUFACE”) armed forces group (“Instituto Social de las Fuerzas Armadas: ISFAS”) and the national system (“Instituto Nacional de la Salud: INSALUD”). The total consumption of antidiabetic drugs varied three-fold, ranging from 5,73 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day (3,71 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day for oral antidiabetic drugs and 2,02 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day for insulin) in the civil servant group to 15,82 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day (12 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day for oral antidiabetic drugs and 3,82 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day for insulins) in the armed forces. The differences were more pronounced for oral antidiabetics than for insulins. The utilization of insulin among the civil servants was about half of that by the two other groups. Of oral antidiabetics, sulphonylureas were the most frequently used by the three groups, and within them glibenclamide accounted for more than half of the DDDs, while biguanides were scarcely used in any group. The differences are difficult to assess, since they could be due to several factors, such as age-differences in the population studied, different prescribing habits, and differences in sociocultural level. The results justify further comparative studies of drug utilization in different health systems within the same region.
