Notizen: Abstract The one-dimensional Fermion system with backward scattering has been analyzed by use of the methods of bosonization and Gaussian wave functional. We find that there exist two kinds of phase transitions in the spin density degree according to the interaction parameters: one is a Kosterlitz-Thouless type transition and the other is a first order phase transition when backward scattering becomes sufficiently strong.

Notizen: Single-frequency collisional activation of multiply charged peptides has been studied via electrospray ionization in an ion trap storage/reflectron time-of-flight device (IT/reTOF). Several peptides with molecular weights ranging from 600 to 1700 were used to demonstrate that sequence information can be obtained with this hybrid instrument with a sensitivity in the low picomole level. Further, a resolution of nearly 1000 can be obtained for the fragment products, due to the cooling effects of the buffer gas in the trap before analysis by the reTOF. The influence of the primary structure of the peptides on the observed collision-induced fragmentation patterns is discussed. Although the current study is limited by the electronics, in terms of its ion isolation capabilities, it is demonstrated that the device has the potential for obtaining sequence information for peptides with excellent sensitivity and relatively high resolution.

Notizen: It was found that the bimolecular type photoinitiators consisting of N-phenylglycine and (thio)xanthene dyes exhibited high initiating efficiency on irradiation of visible light. From the time-resolved spectroscopic study, the free radical is formed by the sensitized decarboxylation of N-phenylglycine in the presence of (thio)xanthene dye. By using these initiating systems, the visible laser sensitive photopolymer was prepared and the imaging characteristics were evaluated.

Notizen: Bromo- and chloromethylated polystyrene (BCMS) prepared for an X-ray resist was sensitized to near UV region by addition of some sensitizers. Among them, 2,4-diisopentylthioxanthone (DITX) and Michler's ketone were found to be efficient sensitizers for BCMS and related polymers under irradiation with a high pressure mercury lamp. To investigate the sensitization mechanism, IR and UV spectra were measured with the BCMS/DITX system under light irradiation. From the results, together with those of oxygen and radical scavenging effects on sensitivity of the polymer, it was suggested that hydrogen abstraction of the triplet state of DITX from the polymer induces photocrosslinking between the polymer chains.

Notizen: Cohesive (Group C) particles have been widely used in various industries. To handle and process such fine particles, a clear understanding of the flow behavior and interparticle force, is needed. To achieve that objective, a Laser Doppler Anemometer system was used to measure particle velocity, fluctuating velocity, and size and extent of agglomeration or cluster formation of particles in a dilute gas/fine oil shale particle flow system with particle density of 2,082 kg/m3, average particle volumetric concentration of 1.5%, and average particle mass flux of about 100 kg/m2·s in a controlled-moisture environment. The flow behavior of the particles was also studied for a mixture of 99% shale particles and 1% antistatic agent (Larostat powder, a quaternary ammonium compound) to examine the role of electrostatic force in gas/cohesive particle flow behavior. The addition of Larostat powder significantly reduced the electrostatic force and, in turn, made Group C particles behave similar to Group A or in some cases to Group B particles. In addition, our experimental data showed that the Maxwellian distribution function is a reasonable assumption to describe the velocity probability density function of the shale particles with or without antistatic agents.

Notizen: A series of tetracoordinated boron complexes derived from various 1,3-diketones and bidentate ligands (oxalato, malonato, catecholato and difluoro) were prepared. Their absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra, at ambient temperature and 77 K, and cyclic voltammmetry in acetonitrile were studied. The boron complexes exhibited high molar absorptivity and fluorescence intensities as compared with the parent diketones; the phenomena are in agreement with the lowest singlet excited state possessing the φ, φ,* configuration with a rigid chelate structure. The redox potential differences correlate linearly with the lowest singlet (Es) as well as the triplet (ET) excited state energy with slopes lower than unity. These linear correlations re-state that the electron exchange and Coulombic integral also vary proportionally to the potential differences. From these correlations, it is possible to determine Es and ET of those boron complexes that do not give fluorescence and phosphorescence.
