Abstract It is shown that in sample-source sandwich arrangements the fraction of positrons annihilating in the source material itself contributes mainly to the source term which is also sensitive to the thermal treatment. The diffusion of the direct deposited source produces some type of surface defects which act as positron trapping sites.
