Abstract Numerical simulations provide a suitable tool to investigate and support the upscaling of melt growth especially of high Tc superconductors. On the macroscopic scale calculations of thermal fields in the YBCO bulk during melt growth were performed. Mesoscopic simulations of the evolution of the microstructure have been made using the phase field method. These results are discussed in relation to experimental results obtained from the real YBCO system. Implications for a possible enhancement of production rates for YBCO bulk material and for tapes are outlined.
