Notizen: Abstract The nutritional status of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients has to be regularly evaluated and alimentary support instituted when indicated. Bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a recent method for determining body composition. The present study evaluates its use in CF patients without any clinical sign of malnutrition. Thirty-nine patients with CF and 39 healthy subjects aged 6–24 years were studied. Body density and midarm muscle circumference were determined by anthropometry and skinfold measurements. Fat-free mass was calculated taking into account the body density. Muscle mass was obtained from the urinary creatinine excretion rate. The resistance index was calculated by dividing the square of the subject's height by the body impedance. We show that fat-free mass, mid-arm muscle circumference and muscle mass are each linearly correlated to the resistance index and that the regression equations are similar for both CF patients and healthy subjects.

Notizen: Abstract The projectile-like fragments emitted in the40Ar +68Zn reaction performed at 14.6, 19.6, 27.6 and 35 MeV/nucleon are studied. Their energy spectra and angular distributions have been measured. Velocities, widths of the linear momentum distributions and cross sections have been deduced. The results are discussedi) in terms of transfer of a few nucleons and analysed with a diffractional model. They are consistent, for stripping reactions, with a direct transfer of nucleons and a target excitation yielding multiparticlemultihole configurations,ii) In terms of projectile fragmentation-like process with a modified abrasion model taking into account the energy separation of the participant nucleons. The projectile fragmentation-like process appears above 20 MeV/nucleon and strongly competes with transfer of nucleons at 35 MeV/nucleon. The evolution of the mechanisms with incident energy is discussed on the basis of the reduced widths of the linear momentum distributions and on those of velocities and cross sections.

Notizen: Abstract Activity monitors based on accelerometry are used to predict the speed and energy cost of walking at 0% slope, but not at other inclinations. Parallel measurements of body accelerations and altitude variation were studied to determine whether walking speed prediction could be improved. Fourteen subjects walked twice along a 1.3km circuit with substantial slope variations (−17% to +17%). The parameters recorded were body acceleration using a uni-axial accelerometer, altitude variation using differential barometry, and walking speed using satellite positioning (DGPS). Linear regressions were calculated between acceleration and walking speed, and between acceleration/altitude and walking speed. These predictive models, calculated using the data from the first circuit run, were used to predict speed during the second circuit. Finally the predicted velocity was compared with the measured one. The result was that acceleration alone failed to predict speed (meanr=0.4). Adding altitude variation improved the prediction (meanr=0.7). With regard to the altitude/acceleration-speed relationship, substantial inter-individual variation was found. It is concluded that accelerometry, combined with altitude measurement, can assess position variations of humans provided inter-individual variation is taken into account. It is also confirmed that DGPS can be used for outdoor walking speed measurements, opening up new perspectives in the field of biomechanics.
