Notizen: Abstract Intracellular potentials are recorded from photoreceptors in a superfused preparation of the retina of a locust compound eye. Chloral hydrate and alkyl alcohols induce a rapid, superfusing reversible depolarization of these photoreceptors when dissolved in the saline. Analysis of voltage noise accompanying depolarization by chloral hydrate suggests that depolarizing ionic pathways are opened briefly and randomly in time in the photoreceptor membranes. This conclusion is supported by measurements of the cell resistance and of voltage noise amplitude as a function of membrane potential. Replacement of superfusate sodium by choline reversibly reduces the effects of chloral hydrate, suggesting that the ionic pathways opened are permeable by sodium. The voltage noise induced by chloral hydrate is compared to that during depolarization by steady illumination of the same cell. As the illumination intensity is increased, the amplitude and the shape of the power spectrum of light-induced voltage noise approach those of drug-induced noise at the same depolarization level. The possibility that these phenomena represent alterations in the mechanism of phototransduction is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Results of studies using tests of thought disorder suggest the possibility of distinguishing three separate and possibly independent syndromes among schizophrenic patients. “Process schizophrenics” seem to be characterized by a relatively low I.Q., general psychomotor retardation, a slow reaction time, perceptual underconstancy, concreteness and distractibility. Many of these specific defects can be produced in normal people by the drug “Sernyl”, but not by other drugs studied. No known drug (such as the phenothiazines) has been shown to improve all these dysfunctions significantly in schizophrenic patients. “Psychotic anxiety reaction” is a label which might be used to describe the thinking disturbances found in many reactive schizophrenics. It consists of a tendency to produce unusual responses in a wide range of experimental situations, accompanied by an unusual degree of “perceptual constancy”. These behavioral abnormalities might be due to the disruptive effects of a very high level of anxiety, and might be alleviated by depressant drugs. “Overinclusive Psychosis”, characterizes a minority of hyperactive schizophrenics and some manic patients, who seem to use unusually broad and vaguely defined concepts in their thinking. LSD may induce this type of thinking in normal subjects, and it is possible that it may respond to phenothiazine medication.

Notizen: Abstract Extracts of femaleRhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann andR. pulchellus Neumann, vectors or potential vectors of East Coast fever, have yielded phenol andp-cresol. The same phenols have been found in five additional species of hard ticks, three of which also contained 2,6-dichlorophenol. Salicylaldehyde appeared as another phenolic component in four of these species. On the basis of this information- and of the rather limited literature available, it appears that ixodid ticks may generally utilize simple phenols as attractants. Behavioral observations suggest a role of the phenols in the meeting of the sexes.
