Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of the retarding action of phenol on the V5+-thiourea initiated polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) have been studied within the temperature range of 30-50°C. The effects of retarder (phenol), metal ion (V5+), monomer (MA), sulfuric acid, some organic solvents and inorganic salts on the percentage and rate of polymerization have been studied. The remarkable observation of the present study is the positive intercept obtained from the plot of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. This type of observation is significantly different from previous studies on retarded polymerization. The values of composite rate constants k0kt/kikpkK have been calculated from plots of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. On the basis of experimental findings a reaction mechanism has been suggested, and a suitable rate expression has been proposed and explained.

Notes: The micellar effect on the kinetics of ceric ion-initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of glucose was studied in the temperature range 40-50°C. The effects of concentration of the metal ion, monomer, sulfuric acid, substrate (glucose), emulsifier, some inorganic salt, and organic solvent on the rate of polymerization (Rp) were also investigated. The remarkable features of the investigation involve the enhancement of Rp in the presence of a micelle, the derivation of the rate expression for the above system along with the calculation of activation energy, and prediction of optimum conditions. Comparison of the rates for a micellar medium with those for the aqueous medium indicates that cationic micelles exert an accelerating influence on the rates of polymerization. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A study of the influence of glycine on the graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto jute fiber using ceric ion has been made. The effect of concentrations of monomer, Ce (IV), and glycine on graft yield have been studied. In addition, the effect of time, temperature, acid, and the amount of jute fiber on graft yield has been investigated. On the basis of experimental findings, a qualitative reaction mechanism has been proposed and the optimum condition for effective grafting has been suggested.

Notes: A kinetic study of the graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto jute fiber using KMnO4-malonic acid redox initiator system has been made. Effects of the concentrations of malonic acid, monomer, and KMnO4 on graft yield have been studied. Besides, the effects of temperature, acid, and reaction medium, some inorganic salts on graft yield have been investigated. The most remarkable features of the investigation include the proposition of a mechanism, derivation of rate expression for the grafting process, and characterization of the grafted fiber by thermogravimetric analysis.

Notes: The micellar effect on the kinetics of ceric ion-initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of N-acetylglycine has been studied in the temperature range 30-50°C. The neutral emulsifier (Triton X-100) has no effect on the Rp, whereas both anionic (NaLS) and cationic (NCTAB) emulsifiers accelerate the rate of polymerization appreciably. Comparison of the effect of different organic substrates on the rate of polymerization has been made. Various effects such as the concentration of metal ion, surfactant, monomer, sulfuric acid, organic solvents, and inorganic salts on Rp have also been investigated. The most remarkable feature of the investigation involves the enhancement of Rp in the presence of micelles. A suitable mechanism for the derivation of the rate expression for the above system is proposed along with the calculation of activation energy and prediction of optimum conditions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto acetylated chemically modified jute was carried out in the temperature range 40-60°C using V5+-cyclohexanone redox initiator system. The effects of temperature, time, concentrations of metal ion (V5+), monomer (AN), cyclohexanone, some inorganic salts, and organic solvents on percent grafting have been studied. IR spectra of acetylated chemically modified jute and grafted jute have been taken, and their characteristic bands have been identified. Grafting has improved the thermal stability and also the lightfastness rating of jute fibers dyed with basic dyes.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto chemically modified bleached jute fibers was studied using Ce(IV)-hippuric acid redox initiator system. The effects of time, temperature, concentration of monomer (AN), metal ion (Ce4+), hippuric acid, sulfuric acid, and amount of jute fiber on graft yield have been studied. The effects of some organic solvents and inorganic salts on graft yield have also been studied. Infrared spectra of chemically modified bleached jute and grafted jute have been taken and their characteristic bands have been identified. More than 90% graft yield could be achieved with the present system.
