Notes: Summary The level of amputations for arterial occlusive disease of the leg is often discussed. We reviewed 230 amputations at the lower extremity performed on 197 patients during the years 1978–1980: 40% were distal to the knee joint, 72% of which healed; 28% had to be reamputated at a more proximal level (31% of the toe amputations, 22% of the metatarsal or transmetatarsal amputations, and 28% of the below knee-amputations). Instead of general above-knee amputation, a more distal amputation should be tried.
