Notes: Using a commercially available flat crystal spectrometer in a slightly modified form, an investigation was made of the peak intensity ratios (Kβ5/Kβ1) and the relative intensities of Kβ″ to Kβ5 in different oxidation states of 3d-transition metal atoms existing in forms of oxidic compounds. The peak intensity ratios (Kβ5/Kβ1) for V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu, as well as the peak profiles of Kβ″ and Kβ5 for V, Cr and Mn, were investigated. Results suggest that changes in the intensities of the Kβ5 and Kβ″ bands can be applied to determining the oxidation number of a metal atom in its oxide.

Notes: A micro high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a resonance Raman detection system is described. For highly sensitive Raman detection, aliphatic amines were derivatized with dabsyl chloride (4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4′-sulfonyl chloride). The derivatives were separated on an ODS micro column (0.5 mm i.d. × 145 mm PTFE tube). Chromatograms were obtained by measuring the intensity of Raman scattering at 1136 cm-1 with the 488.0 nm line of an Arion laser. The lower detection limit was 1.5 ng and the RSD of relative peak height (n = 9) was 5.9% at 11 ng of methylamine derivative. Moreover, by stopping the flow of the micro HPLC system at the retention time of the individual derivatives, it was possible to measure their resonance Raman spectra.

Notes: The Raman scattering from echelette silver gratings coated with p-nitrobenzoic acid (PNBA) films was measured as a function of the angle of incidence of the exciting laser beam. It was found that on excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the grating, the Raman scattering intensity of the adsorbed PNBA- species is enhanced by a factor of five compared with its intensity at off-resonance angles of incidence. However, an enhancement of about a factor of 10 in our estimation is observed with s-polarized radiation independent of the angle of incidence, indicating the presence of some supplementary mechanism other than the high-field intensity of SPP in the enhancement process. No Raman bands due to PNBA were observed in the thickness range up to 50 nm.
