Notes:
Summary The most important method available to radiological diagnostics in the case of acute bleeding from the esophagus, stomach or duodenum is oral contrast radiography, which is, nevertheless, not completely reliable in these situations. The introduction of angiography has improved the diagnostic results. With this technique it is possible to localize arterial bleeding directly by extravasation of contrast medium and to prove a venous hemorrhage by indirect visualization of the portal vein and its branches and of varices.
