Notizen: Abstract Radon-222 activity levels have been measured at deck level in regions of the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal during the summer monsoon periods of 1973, 1977, and 1979, as part of the Monex programme. The aim of the measurements was to find the source regions of the monsoon air and the variations in its composition under different synoptic conditions. The radon data confirm that the monsoon air is predominantly of southern-hemisphere origin, with a small continental component. The continental component, as indicated by radon values, increases at higher latitudes and seems to vary with different circulation patterns in the synoptic scale. The use of radon as a tracer in monsoon studies is thus demonstrated.

Notizen: The structural changes during the complexation of benzo-crown ethers with Cs+, K+ and Na+ were studied by NOESY and variable-temperature 13C NMR spectroscopy. It was found that, on complexation, the distance between the CH-α and 1-CH2 is reduced in dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), dibenzo-18-crown-6 and benzo-15-crown-5. Two mechanisms have been proposed for the distance reduction, the fluttering motion of the benzo group and the elongation of the crown moiety. However, it is concluded that both of these mechanisms seem to play a role in the distance reduction. In the complexed state of DB24C8 with Cs+, Cs+ is predicted to be slightly above the plane of the crown oxygens with respect to DB24C8.

Notizen: The use of one-dimensional total correlation spectroscopy (1D TOCSY) combined with the z-filtration technique to generate pure phase subspectra of individual isomers from the spectrum of the corresponding mixture without any chemical separation of the mixture is described. A straightforward spectral assignment is achieved for the isomers obtained on lithium aluminium hydride reduction of 2,7-dioxatetracyclo[3.3.04,9.08,11] undeca-3,6-dione (dilactone) by studying the subspectrum of each isomer as a function of the propagation time of magnetization through the network of coupled protons.
